Last Friday, January 18, one of Mies van der Rohe's distinguished students, Arthur Takeuchi (ARCH ’54, M.S. ’59) gave a private lecture at Crown Hall. He talked about monumental architecture (like places of worship) and the "space model" project discussion (a 4th year B. Arch studio that he taught for decades at IIT). He spoke of the proper orientation of the "transparent" building and the benefit of landscape and vegetation. He said, "One of the benefits of the trees is that they become one with the interior. One does not need the stained glass windows at that point!"

Imperial Oil (later Esso petrol station)
Mies van der Rohe, 1966
Montreal

Contrary to popular belief, Mies did in fact design a gas station once. Located at the Ile des Souers (Nuns' Island) in the south-west portion of the Montreal metro area, the station provided dino-juice for decades until it was closed down in 2012. During that time the Canadian firm Les Architectes FABG was commissioned with its renewal and restoration. Today, it hosts La Station Community Centre.

Minerals and Metals Building
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1944
Chicago

Originally named the Armour Research Foundation Metals Research Building, this building was Mies’ first commission in the United States. It is said that Mies took Albert Kahn’s 1941 Chrysler Tank Arsenal building in Detroit as inspiration for this project. The fact that the building’s structure was made out of metal and that it was completed during World War II is truly remarkable for very little was being built at the time, especially projects using steel, due to metal conservation programs for the war effort.

Ron BacardCompañía S.A. Administration Building (model)
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1957
Santiago de Cuba.

Eleven years before the inauguration of the neue Nationalgalerie in 1968, Mies designed the new Bacardi Headquarters in Cuba (picture). Due to political unrest, the project was delayed and then cancelled. However, Mies never discarded the project's design potential and he would later improve some structural elements to best fit a German context.

P.S. The Cuban building was to be made out of concrete instead (in lieu of steel, as done in the Berlin project).

This past weekend, Mies Society Director Cynthia Vranas had an incredible evening with the Minister of Culture from Saxony, Germany and his group of dignitaries—in celebration of German-American Unity Day! The diplomat and his entourage spent the day on Mies Campus participating in a series of events, followed by a dinner at the Mid-America Club. Director Vranas was invited out of their very high regard for IIT (and our relationship to the Bauhaus) but even more out of their esteem for the Mies van der Rohe Society!
IIT College of Architecture Hamburg Studio Professor Martin Klaeschen also attended (CoA students are now studying there in part due to the generosity of the Droste scholarships). German exchange students based in Chicago presented their work in Crown Hall. What a night!

The Consulate General was honored to celebrate the Day of German Unity with State Minister Rainer Robra of Saxony-Anhalt and his delegation at the Union League Club of Chicago.

Consul General Quelle and Minister Robra delivered remarks on the continued importance of German-American cooperation. Joining us in the celebration of German Unity were Deputy Governor Leslie Munger and representatives from the offices of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, and Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas.

5:10 pm Lecture: 100 Years of Bauhaus
Dr. Claudia Perren, CEO and Director Bauhaus Dessau

6:00 to 8:00pm Exhibition Opening Reception:
Introduction & Moderation: Prof. Martin Kläschen

Presentation and Discussion: Prof. Klaus Sill, Prof. Paolo Fusi, Prof. Antje Stokman and students of the HCU Hamburg: "Designing the Future of the Chicago River South-Branch"

The waterfronts of the twin cities of Hamburg and Chicago are important for their historical and economic development and the quality of life of their residents. The decline and relocation of space-intensive port related industries and businesses open up great potentials of land and water reuse. The transatlantic cooperation "urban waters" of the departments of architecture and urban planning of the HCU Hamburg and the IIT Chicago investigate, how to redefine these waterfronts in favor of both cities.
