I've been maintaining lists of Chicago area youth tutor, mentor and learning programs since 1993 with the goal of helping each program attract a more consistent flow of dollars, volunteers and ideas. Since many now share information on Instagram I spent part of my MLKing, Jr celebration building a page listing Instagram sites for many of the programs on my list. You can see it at http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/chi-orgs-instagram

My Facebook list is at http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/tm-programs-on-facebook

I depend on help from others to keep this information updated. If you know of programs that no longer operate or if you know of programs not on my lists please post updates here or DM me with information.

When I search Instagram for words like #tutor I find pages for many #Chicago youth programs, like https://www.instagram.com/tutoringchicago/.

However, I can't find a list feature where I could aggregate links and make it easier to look at posts from multiple local programs.

Social Bonding - Lost Due to Covid19

My blog post today reflected on the field trips and social events that were part of the social capital and bonding strategies of the tutor/mentor programs Ied in Chicago from 1975-2011. With covid19 restrictions how are current programs building these bonds? http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2021/01/social-bonding-lost-due-to-covid19.html

I posted this #MentoringMonth message on Jan 2. It's an update on post from 2008, sharing vision of tutor/mentor program I led with our volunteers.

I wrote how "kids are all different and constantly changing. Thus, while I can provide a structure for your participation, I can't teach you everything you need to know, or everything I've learned. I can try to help you, and your student, form a learning strategy, where you know where to find information, and find help, so that as you meet weekly, you know where to go for ideas to stimulate and support your involvement."

Volunteers in 2020 programs can still be guided by this message. http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2021/01/mentoring-month-message-to-volunteers.html

Today's Chicago SunTimes editorial talks about violence reduction strategies but ends saying "without addressing the root causes of disinvestment, poverty and inequitable social policies Chicago's violence reduction efforts will fail."

I've posted 168 articles on my Tutor/Mentor blog since 2005 focusing on the need for comprehensive, ongoing, Birth-to-Work strategies that reach youth in every high poverty neighborhood of the city and suburbs. Skim through them as you make 2021 plans and commitments. http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/search/label/violence

There are at least 200 youth serving organizations in Chicago and suburbs who use some form of volunteer based tutoring and/or mentoring in their service delivery. Building a master database of who they are has been work I started in 1993. Connecting programs to ideas, resources and each other has been an on-going challenge. Here's article I wrote today that focuses on this. http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2020/12/building-and-sustaining-youth-support.html

MENTOR New York released a report on the "State of NY Mentoring" which shows the impact of #covid19 on NY programs. Has anyone done similar for #Chicago or other cities? Take a look. https://www.mentornewyork.org/covid19-resources-tips

I'm sure Covid19 has had similar impact in most cities and that access to flexible operating dollars is more important than ever. While each program will continue to compete for scarce funding I encourage programs to use social media to talk of the benefits of well-supported volunteers in tutor/mentor programs and point donors to lists of programs that they can shop and fund. You could do this from you own websites, saying "Fund me, but fund them, too".

This is one of many concept maps that I've created since 2005. On the right it shows many of the challenges kids, families and educators face daily. On the left is my "mentoring kids to careers" map that shows different types of support mentors and tutors can provide as kids go through the 12 years of first grade through 12th grade. A small map is shaded to show high poverty areas of Chicago. Each of these areas needs a full range of programs that reduce the challenges and provide the mentoring support.

What leaders are using maps like this to show the complex problems they are trying to solve? See this at https://cmapspublic.ihmc.us/rid=1SV6LFW40-1CRY9MM-47Z/BirthToWork-Challenges-USA.cmap

I've been using maps since 1993 to focus attention on Chicago neighborhoods where high poverty is the root cause of many challenges facing youth and families. This blog article shows an example. What I demonstrate can be duplicated by youth and volunteers from throughout the Chicago region. If there were 100 blog articles with this same story, or a version of it, there would be more people looking for ways to help youth tutor, mentor and learning programs grow in these neighborhoods. If you've created a story like this share the link in the comments section.

If you find time over Thanksgiving weekend and the holiday season I encourage you to look at articles on my blog showing ways anyone can take an intermediary role to connect people they know or influence to places in Chicago and other places where maps show indicators of need. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2020/11/thanksgiving-2020-thoughts-about-maps.html

My maps and information library focus attention on places where youth tutor, mentor and learning programs, such as I led for nearly 40 years, are needed. Some already exist. Find them and offer support. More are needed in many places. Borrow ideas from existing programs in Chicago and around the world, and use those ideas to build new programs.

I posted series of Tweets this morning showing sections of the Tutor/Mentor web library that I've been building since 1990s. The first graphic, from a 2000 newsletter, shows my goal of such libraries being used by different groups of people in on-going efforts to make youth tutor, mentor and learning programs available in more places. https://twitter.com/tutormentorteam/status/1330899651483066369?s=20

“This graphic from #Tutor #Mentor 2000 newsletter show potential of information libraries hosting conversations of many groups who care about same issues. Maintaining the library, inviting viewers, facilitating understanding r big challenges. https://t.co/PHpgVbNrf5”

I've focused on helping youth in high poverty communities for more than 35 years. This week I heard those places described as "Low Status Communities" where young people seek to escape as they gain education and opportunity, rather than want to invest and make their lives. I wrote about this at https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2020/11/helping-youth-in-low-status-communities.html

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris need to be focusing on helping rebuild communities that fit this description, in big urban areas, as well as in rural areas and reservations. Investors and philanthropists need to take active roles, too.

While the November election and #covid19 dominate news cycles the work of helping kids safely from birth to work does not stop. And some kids need more help than others. I've used this graphic for more than 20 years to show the information base I've been building to support understanding and actions of others who need to be actively involved.

While I worked in the retail advertising department of Montgomery Ward from 1973-1990 I was one of many functional teams working to help ALL of our retail stores be great at serving customers and generating sales and profits. I've applied that thinking to the Tutor/Mentor Connection since I formed it in 1993. This is just one of many articles where I talk about generating public will (advertising) to support all youth tutor/mentor programs in Chicago with consistent flexible operating dollars. I'm just one voice in this effort.

Others need to use my list of programs and my blog articles as a template for writing their own articles, creating their own videos and influencing people they know. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2020/08/building-public-will-to-invest-in.html
