How has it been 4 months already since you left my side? Miss you everyday Atom Bomb. Love you forever.
As most have heard by now Atom the k9 officer from Braidwood Il was forced into early retirement. Atom has worked with Officer Savarino at the Braidwood PD since March of 2005.
The working run of a Belgin Malinois like Atom is 10-11 years, Atom has only been in service 6 yrs, no where near retirement age. Atom, in his 6 years of work has found more than a million dollars of drug money. The return on that moneyto the city is if found by the BPD 76%, if found with DEA 20%, local or state agency 12%, so needless to say no matter whom he found it with he made lots of money for the city of Braidwood. Atom has taken more than 2 million dollars in street value drugs off our streets, imagine what he could do in a full life term of 11 yrs! Atom has worked closely with neighboring police departments, local narcotics and interdiction teams, DEA (drug enforcement agency), ICE (Immigration custom enforcements) and numerous IL state police districts. He has apprehended 3 armed suspects on a local island who had numerous stolen boats with them, he has recovered stolen vehicles and once found a local 5 year old autistic boy who had wandered away to be found at a city park. He has apprehended several criminals in his five short years. He has done schools searches in a effort to keep drugs away from children of many ages. Atom has provided demonstrations for girls and boyscout groups, wilco and local schools and many more institutions. Which brings us to Atom's retirement. You might ask why he has been retired. It appears to me that Atom was retired because he apprehended a DUI driver, whom proceeded to resisted arrest and was actively fighting with 4 officers. The suspect stood 6'6" weighing over 350lbs and was highly intoxicated at the time of arrest. The events lead to Atom being deployed to make the apprehension. The suspect later filed a lawsuit against the city of Braidwood for multiple alleged violations and filed civil lawsuits against the multiple officers. Atom and the Officers where cleared of any wrong doing ,everything was done according to IL training and standards for K9 apprehensions and the city settled to a whopping $200,000. I am asking you to make your voices heard for our four legged brother in blue. Please call the Mayor Bill Rulien or Health and Safety commisioner Eric Tessler and tell them how much we need Atom to be protecting the streets of Braidwood. Let's make sure the drug dealers DO NOT take our streets away from our families and children. ***UPDATE!!!*** Atom now resides with new owner, Lorrin Paun, who along with Atom has made it her mission to promote canine wellness throughout Illinois and NW Indiana. Lorrin is a firm believer in canine nutrition and the health and happiness it can bring your dog when done properly. Please follow us for pet nutrition tips and advice, as well as product reviews. As always, questions and comments are always welcome!

It is with overwhelming sadness and heart break that I announce Atom's passing to all of his loyal fans and followers. Atom left one week ago today. Please forgive the delayed announcement, as I'm still paralyzed with grief. He was a hero many many times. A true best friend and the epitome of loyalty. Life with no Atom is unbearable at this point. In hopes of healing, I reach out to the many who have been following him for months. He was a one of a kind dog and stole my heart the second I got him. Miss him terribly and I hope rainbow bridge is real and that he knows how many lives he's touched and how much he was loved. Until him and I meet again. Rest in peace my Wonder Dog. ❤️

How many retired K9s do you know that can go to the salon with you? Atom is one special guy of mine!! So privileged to have a boy like him to take everywhere.
We don't feed much dry food. At least not on a daily basis. When we do, it looks a little something like this. Grain free turkey kibble, reverse osmosis water, unpasteurized goats milk, digestive enzymes, sardine/anchovy oil AND of course spirulina. Only the best for my "Wonder Dog!"
"Mom, whoever said dogs can't have grapes is clearly lying! I can eat them so please share!" Hahaha nice try Atom! No grapes for you!
"I hope everyone likes my new pictures!"
Jolly Ball FUN!!

Now that we've got everybody's attention, where do we go from here? What do all of you Atom fans want to know?? Should we dive right into nutrition and how I keep my crew so healthy and active in their older years?? Open for requests!! -Lorrin
For all of those wondering about Onyx, here she is! Lost her battle with degenerative myelopathy at only 8. Gone way way too soon. Her story is a special one as well. I originally got her from Leader Dogs for the blind. I was her puppy raiser/trainer and prepared her for formal training she would receive once she turned a year old. After 3 months of formal training she was released from the program and sent back to me due to never getting over her separation anxiety. She was always looking for me! Her road was a little rough in the beginning due to her developed epilepsy. Her seizures were later controlled and completely stopped once she was switched to healthy, grain free foods that consisted of real ingredients a dog should eat. Her last 5 years were completely seizure free. No meds, just pure healthy foods and supplements. She was an active girl and ran ten miles a day with me (while I was on rollerblades.) She was FULL of energy and spirit. While there is no cure for DM, we did multiple natural therapies that included acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments. At the very least, she was bought more time to be loved. She was a sassy one and very choosey of who could be next to me. Her and Atom shared a month together before I lost her. She accepted him and even seemed to enjoy having a male around (aside from her Chihuahua bro.) I like to believe she went peacefully knowing Atom would watch over me. Calling her a great dog is an understatement (as goes for Atom.) She would be proud of her brother! This is her just 5 months before she went to rainbow bridge. Didn't look 8, did she? ❤
Atom had a cozy night of sleep, snuggled up with Mom and his Chihuahua brother, Stoli. We are so touched by all of the love shown by everyone! We are doing our best to keep up with the messages and any questions being asked. This is amazing! He has been a hero for YEARS and it warms my heart to see him get the attention he truly deserves. We will continue to post updates and pictures, as he's always got something exciting going on! Thankyou to all for your love and support! More than anything else, were just happy Kessa is home with her family that loves her and was missing her terribly. -Lorrin and Atom "The Wonder Dog" ❤

It's important to know and understand that there is a time and place for medicine, as well as a time and place for natural therapies. I learned last night that sometimes there's a time and place for both. Those of you who see me on a regu
lar basis at Schererville know that I am 100% holistic with my dogs, mostly because of the experiences I've had with my dogs health before alot of these options were available. The past few days Atom surprised us and got extremely sick, to the point where I thought I was going to lose him. No vomiting or diarrhea, but couldnt walk, eat, and extremely lethargic. Completely out of no where! After a visit with my regular vet (around the corner from my house) I learned he has some type of blood infection. The cause is unknown, but with a temp of 105 it wasn't good. To see Atom without energy is scary! The vet worked on him with a few different things, drew some blood and that was really all we could do. When he started moaning and couldn't lay down comfortably I rushed him to our holistic vet to see what she thought. I cannot say how much I respect our Western Medicine Veterinarian, but my holistic vet and I are always on the exact same page and have a mutual respect for eachother, with her knowing that I am very opinionated about treatments and how I want to handle certain things. After 2 days of waiting, panicking, acupuncture, vitamin injections, force feeding and IV fluids we still are uncertain about the cause of the infection. It's possible that it was due to a tick that couldn't have been on him for more than 12 hours. I was warned that he may not improve as quickly as I wanted him to and to be ready for more tests and treatments. WELL, like the strong man he is he ended up bouncing back and is almost at 100%. When I got phone calls from BOTH vets this morning (they both are really great people) they were both ready with more treatment plans thinking he would be in the same state as when they saw him. FORTUNATELY my boy was extremely willing to gulp down two of the most natural and healthiest drinks available throughout the night, coconut water and unpasteurized goats milk. From that he received the highest amounts of electrolytes from the water (without the junk in other electrolyte drinks) and the many MANY benefits from the goats milk. Both are products safe for both humans and pets, and both are absolutely amazing (especially when used together.) Moral of the story is sometimes you can't go all holistic or all western medicine. The important part is finding the right "team" in doctors that will work well together and understand that there is no room for ego when your pet is sick. It's important for your doctor to listen to you! It's hard to find ONE person with all the right answers. In addition to that, sometimes you just have to have good faith in what you know and try things that make sense to you. It made sense to treat Atom with the fluids that I did, knowing what we know about the benefits of both. It's extremely important to know your dog and have contact with them on a daily basis. Take advantage of our self serve dog wash. The washing and blow-drying gives you an up close look of your dogs skin and is a great way to notice any lumps or abnormalities that you sometimes can't see with just petting. It's important to know the risks of using traditional flea and tick preventatives, but it's also important to keep those suckers off of your pets (there are natural options!) It's important to try different supplements and foods, as they all have something amazing to offer (or we wouldn't carry them!) Ask us our opinion on certain things. We love to talk about our products and we love to share stories about how they work. We love hearing our customers' concerns, what works and what doesn't and what experiences you've had with your pets. Use this holistic style of feeding as a way to connect with your dog and know that you're doing a great thing by providing them with natural foods. Personally, I view any issue with my dogs as a learning experience. Sometimes they just get sick. In this case, illness picked the wrong dog! :) For all of you that share your stories with me, I wanted to share one of mine. Atom is back at work with me today, chewing on his ball. He's going to be on antibiotics for a long time, but I trust BOTH of my vets and know this is what he needs. He's going to be just fine :)
Really missing my baby dog Atom as I see all these young men and ladies dying of Heroin abuse in town. So much could have been prevented by the work of this special dog Braidwood suffers from Atom being gone but I know he has a good comfy life with his new momma. Hope you new adventures are exciting Atom
HEROIN: I destroy homes, tear families apart, take your children, and that's just the start. I'm more costly than diamonds, more costly than gold, the sorrow I bring is a sight to behold, and if you need me, remember I'm easily found. I live all around you, in schools and in town. I live with the rich, I live with the poor, I live down the street, and maybe next door. My power is awesome; try me .
you'll see, but if you do, you may never break free. Just try me once and I might let you go, but try me twice, and I'll own your soul. When I possess you, you'll steal and you'll lie. You do what you have to just to get high. The crimes you'll commit, for my narcotic charms will be worth the pleasure you'll feel in your arms. You'll lie to your mother; you'll steal from your dad When you see their tears, you should feel sad. But you'll forget your morals and how you were raised, I'll be your consci
ence, I'll teach you my ways. I take kids from parents
, and parents from kids, I turn people from god, and separate from friends. I'll take everything from you, your looks and your pride, I'll be with you always, right by your side. You'll give up everything your family, your home, your friends, your money, then you'll be alone. I'll take and take, till you have nothing more to give. When I'm finished with you you'll be lucky to live. If you try me be warned this is no game. If given the chance, I'll drive you insane.I'll ravish your body; I'll control your mind. I'll own you completely; your soul will be mine. The nightmares I'll give you while lying in bed, the voices you'll hear from inside your head, the sweats, the shakes, the visions you'll see; I want you to know, these are all gifts from me, But then it's too late, and you'll know in your heart, that you are mine, and we shall not part. You'll regret that you tried me, they always do, but you came to me, not I to you. You knew this would happen. Many times you were told, but you challenged my power, and chose to be bold. You could have said no, and just walked away, If you could live that day over, now what would you say? I'll be your master; you will be my slave, I'll even go with you, when you go to your grave. Now that you have met me , what will you do? Will you try me or not? Its all up to you. I can bring you more misery than words can tell. Come take my hand, let me lead you to hell...
I hope everyone enjoys the photo updates of Atom! He's a healthy, happy, and very active boy lately! We had our first beach outing on Thursday and I had to rename him "ATOM PHELPS!" He's no joke when it comes to swimming! I had doubts on his swimming abilities because just 2 days before I was skimming my above ground pool and Atom thought he would "help." He jumped up on the ledge that's about 4 inches wide and quickly lost his balance and fell right in the water! I jumped in right away to help him get out before he tore my pool lining trying to claw his way out! I for sure thought this boy couldn't swim because of how he reacted, but he proved me wrong at the beach. He's a joy to have and I love him more everyday! -Lorrin P.S. I will do better at posting more pictures since clearly there are still many of you who do follow what he's up to! :)
Atom's new adventure!
Atom is so eager to please!!
Atom competed in his very first French Ring trial this past Sunday! He gained his CSAU title, which is the temperament test. How's that for this "aggressive" dog?
Happy 8th birthday ATOM!
Atom will be honored in a ceremony tomorrow Feb 23,2012 at 3p.m. at the city hall in Braidwood. All are welcome to attend!
