Illinois Army National Guard Sgt. Luigi Cabantog was honored at the June 3 American Hockey League Western Conference Finals game between the Chicago Wolves and the Colorado Eagles in Chicago. The Illinois Army National Guard also provided the color guard for the game, a 2-1 Wolves victory. Cabantog is a Recruiting and Retention NCO in the Illinois Army National Guard and is assigned to the 1644th Transportation Company in Rock Falls. Originally from Gapan, Philippines, he moved to the United States at age 13 and is a proud graduate of Westchester Middle School and Proviso West High School. He enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in 2019 and, after attending University of Illinois, chose a path of service in the military, beginning his career as a Motor Transport Operator supporting critical logistics missions, including Operation Patriot Press. He later led the Military Funeral Honors Program for Northern Illinois, helping conduct approximately 1,000 services to honor fallen veterans and provide dignity and support to their families. Since July 2022, Cabantog has also served on the Board of Directors for Prevention First, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to substance misuse prevention, mental health promotion, and building healthier communities, where he serves as Treasurer and is the youngest board member in the organization’s history. In recognition of his service and impact beyond the uniform, he is also a recipient of the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for his work and leadership within the community. As a noncommissioned officer, he is deeply committed to leadership, mentorship, and helping others reach their full potential in both military service and the community.
