It was a pleasure meeting with Dane and Katherine from Block Bins to learn about how they’re making composting an affordable option for Chicagoans. If you’d like to start composting at your home or business, you can request a block bin in your alley (or see if your neighbors already have one!) at www.blockbins.com/map.

Our February Plant of the Month from Pollinator Prairie Patch is the Purple Coneflower!

Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is a well recognized plant, both due to many horticultural varieties available in big box stores as well as its medicinal properties. The original native plant is beautiful in its own right with an elegant globe-shaped middle - which serves as a great landing spot for many pollinators - and bright petals. Additionally it is a plant that will survive from full to part sun, can thrive in clay soils and is a great source of bird food in winter. Whether your garden is full of full of native plants that might be unrecognizable to your neighbors, or you are just beginning to add native plants to your landscape, purple coneflower will be a sign of familiarity connecting the new native plant garden aesthetic to a well established garden favorite.

Today, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved the creation of a task force that will establish the Alternative Health Intervention and Response Pilot Program. The pilot program will change the way Cook County responds to mental and behavioral health emergencies by using an appropriate mental health response, specifically with professionals trained in de-escalation techniques, knowledge of community services and resources, and respectful interaction with those experiencing a crisis while at the same time diverting non-violent/non-criminal calls from a police response.

This Resolution has been a labor of love over the past year and a half, during which I met with over thirty organizations and stakeholders in Cook County and across the East and West coasts that run programs aimed at transforming our public safety system. These mobile mental health units are long overdue in Cook County and will dispatch teams of medics and social workers providing direct services to those experiencing mental and behavioral health crisis. I am excited that Cook County is joining the effort to transform what public safety looks like in our communities.

Today’s passage furthers Cook County’s commitment to mental and behavioral health services and will use American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and initiatives to start the task force and implement the pilot program in unincorporated Cook County and the following suburbs that have an agreement with Cook County’s 911 system: Berkely, Blue Island, Dixmoor, Ford Heights, Golf, Harvey, Hometown, Indian Head Park, Lyons, Merrionette Park, Northlake, Palos Park, Park Ridge, and Phoenix. The Task Force will determine appropriate responses for people in crisis, set County-led goals to reduce reliance on the criminal justice system, develop a system to support those with mental and behavioral health needs including on-scene crisis assistance, refer people for treatment, connect those in need to crisis care and provide follow up support for emergency services.

A huge thank you to all of the individuals and organizations who worked to make this happen: TASC, Cahoots, the Denver Alliance for Street Health Response, Portland Street Response, Oakland's Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland (MACRO), Sheriff Tom Dart, the 911 Dispatch Center, Community Counseling Centers of Chicago (C4) , Health & Medicine Policy Research Group (HMPRG), Mental Health America of Illinois, Kennedy Forum of Illinois, Cook County Health, National Nurses United, NAMI, New York Social Action, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, Illinois Department of Human Services, Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, Chicago Department of Public Health, and the Justice Advisory Council (JAC).

I am thrilled to share that the Alternative Health Intervention and Response Teams Resolution has passed the Cook County Board's Health and Hospital Committee today! This resolution establishes a mobile crisis intervention pilot program in Cook County. It will provide 911 callers seeking mental or behavioral health support with an appropriate mental health response, specifically with professionals trained in de-escalation techniques, knowledge of community services and resources, and respectful interaction with those experiencing a crisis while at the same time diverting non-violent/non-criminal calls from a police response. This is an exciting step forward in supporting those with mental and behavioral health needs. I'm excited to introduce this resolution to the Board tomorrow. Thank you to my co-sponsors!

What are you doing Wednesday at 2:00 pm? You're joining our Earth Day Power Hour of course. Zoom link is below, all are welcome to participate and be inspired to take action. See you there!
Hi, my name is Melissa, and I'm a constituent of yours. I am calling to urge you to support families who have been previously denied stable housing by voting to adopt the Just Housing Amendment rules set forth by the Human Rights Commission.
Hello Commissioner, I was just reviewing my county tax assessment and my assessed value has increased over 100% which is ridiculous because my small 800 sqf condo's selling value certainly hasn't doubled. This is really serious. My property tax has DOUBLED and that is with the homeowner exemption. Are you looking into how to address this situation for residents? Thank you
