We’re starting a new series. Every month our office will feature a different Plant of the Month. These plants are Native to the Chicago area, support our pollinators, and can be planted in your garden or yard! These information is presented in collaboration with local business Pollinator Prairie Patch!

Our July Plant of the Month: the Rose Milkweed - Asclepias Incarnata.

Rose milkweed is a type of a milkweed (plants in the genus Asclepias) that has all the beauty of pink and fragrant flowers that attract many pollinators, but is way better behaved than its cousin the common milkweed (Asclapias syriaca) which can spread by underground, horizontal roots called rhizomes. Rose milkweed stays in place, grows between 3-5 feet tall, prefers full sun and moist soils but will handle part sun and medium soil conditions. Just like other milkweeds, Rose milkweed is a host plant for the iconic monarch butterfly - the monarch butterfly caterpillars can eat nothing else but milkweed.

By planting rose milkweed in your yard you are beautifying your space, helping the monarch butterfly and other pollinators, helping to keep storm water out of our sewers, educating others about ways to help the environment and about our natural history.

Editorial: A tax referendum even penny-pinchers might approve

"For users of the forest preserves, it would mean better trail maintenance, clearer signage, more programs, more exercise options, and improvements at two Chicago-area gems, the zoo and the botanical garden"

The Cook County Forest Preserve District will leave it up to taxpayers to decide, yea or nay, whether to increase taxes, through a referendum on the November 2022 election ballot. That’s always a good thing — giving voters a voice.

Forest preserves need our help to flourish in the future | Editorial

"Like the lakefront, Cook County’s expansive forest preserves are a defining feature of the Chicago area. They are a jewel in need of caring stewardship."

Collar county forest preserve districts have passed multiple referendums to improve their holdings. The Forest Preserve District of Cook County never has done so.

Yesterday I had the honor of attending the ribbon cutting for the grand opening of Southside Blooms first brick and mortar shop! Southside Blooms is a project of Chicago Eco House. It is a farm-to-vase florist on the Southside of Chicago that takes empty lots around Chicago and turns them into profitable and sustainable flower farms. Every purchase directly contributes to job creation for at-risk youth and young adults in some of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods. The work that Southside Blooms and its founder Quilen Blackwell do for our communities is an inspiration, and their commitment to sustainability should be applauded. I encourage everyone to check out their online shop (https://www.southsideblooms.com/shop) for flower delivery or visit their shop in Englewood.

Explore The Legacy Walk | Legacy Project Chicago

It's the last day of Pride Month, but there is always time to appreciate LGBTQ history. The Legacy Walk is a great way to learn about the contributions members of the LGBTQ community have made in our community and around the globe. This outdoor museum walk located along North Halsted Street Corridor, between Belmont Ave. and Grace St, is home to twenty "Rainbow Pylons." Each showcases two members of the LGBTQ community and their impact on music, technology, art, and society. Since its conception in 1987, the goal of this walk has been to inspire and educate the public. This walk is a great way to end Pride Month with friends and family.

Along the half mile of the North Halsted Street Corridor, between Belmont Avenue and Grace Street, ten (10) pairs of 25'-tall decorative....

1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission

Monday was the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre, one of the worst acts of racial violence in our country's history. I wanted to share some resources that I found helpful in educating myself on the history of this terrible event that was suppressed from our history books for so long:
https://www.npr.org/2021/05/30/1000923192/3-documentaries-you-should-watch-about-the-tulsa-race-massacre
https://www.tulsa2021.org/

The 1921 Tulsa Race Riot Centennial Commission will leverage the rich history surrounding the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot by facilitating actions, activities, and events that commemorate and educate all citizens.

Hi, my name is Melissa, and I'm a constituent of yours. I am calling to urge you to support families who have been previously denied stable housing by voting to adopt the Just Housing Amendment rules set forth by the Human Rights Commission.
Hello Commissioner, I was just reviewing my county tax assessment and my assessed value has increased over 100% which is ridiculous because my small 800 sqf condo's selling value certainly hasn't doubled. This is really serious. My property tax has DOUBLED and that is with the homeowner exemption. Are you looking into how to address this situation for residents? Thank you
