property was built in 1905 and included multiple buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. North Lawndale had not fared as well. It was ravished by the riots of the 60’s; unemployment skyrocketed when factories closed; crime rates were high; schools were below average; and there were few prospects for change. North Lawndale had all the characteristics of communities throughout the Rust Belt that had been under-served and neglected for decades. Although Sears had been a responsible owner and maintained their buildings, most were empty, and the prospects for redevelopment within the existing environment were slim. Starting in 1989, developer Charlie Shaw, Sears chairman Ed Brennan and retired Sears vice president Charley Moran, developed a concept plan designed to reinvigorate the community and revitalize the neighborhood of North Lawndale. Shaw met with Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, elected officials, and community and business leaders. These meetings revealed not only deep concern over the future of the community, but clear ideas for what was needed. Community leaders expressed support for a three-pronged development strategy to include new housing, commercial development and community services, including recreational and health care facilities. Shaw knew that such a project would require a massive and long-term partnership of the public, private and community sectors. Mayor Daley showed enormous leadership by committing the City to millions of dollars in road, sewer and infrastructure improvements. Sears made significant commitments of support. With pledges of private investment, city commitment, and community support in hand, Shaw told Sears that the project was a go. The vision for Homan Square was born.

To all our Facebook friends,

I am so very sorry to share the shocking and terrible news that we lost our friend, colleague and ROCK Laura Lode suddenly on Wednesday night. Thankfully, her last day on earth was a very, very happy one, and she suffered no pain.

We will desperately miss her loyalty, professionalism, persistence, attention to every detail, her incredible sense of humor, and especially her friendship.

In sorrow and love,

Kristin Dean and the entire staff at the Foundation for Homan Square

Register for the North Lawndale Community Planning Conference
The North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC) and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) cordially invite you to participate in our first annual North Lawndale community planning conference on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The conference will be held at DRW College Preparatory High School, 931 South Homan Avenue in Chicago, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. The event is free, but you need to reserve a space. Seating is limited. You can find more information about NLCCC at our website, http://nlccc.org.
The conference will serve as a public kick-off of the second phase of the North Lawndale community comprehensive planning process. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) will be providing an overview of the comprehensive planning process as it relates to the physical environment, and then will facilitate a workshop to guide the community through a discussion of strengths, weaknesses and opportunities that the planning process could bring. Members of the NLCCC will build upon this process to facilitate breakout sessions to identify community needs and issues and develop very high level initial goals and objectives for multiple quality of life sectors. We expect 200 community stakeholders to attend, including our elected officials, heads of public agencies, local residents, leaders of community-based organizations, students and educators, business owners and faith-based leaders.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dorine Poole at [email protected] or 773-826-1356.

Free Spirit Media was thrilled to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony at The Nichols Tower at Homan Square today with the Nichols family, Foundation for Homan Square, UCAN, North Lawndale Employment Network, a 501c3, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Alderman Michael Scott, Jr., and Mayor Rahm Emanuel. #FreeSpiritPRO captured live footage of the ceremony and #HoopsHIGH alumna / Free Spirit PRO producer Cheyenne Banks delivered a moving speech about her experience with Free Spirit Media.

Thank you to Impact 100 Chicago, our supporters and board members who joined us for this exciting event, celebrating a new community resource and center for arts education and youth development in North Lawndale. We cannot wait to move into our spaces on the 5th and 11th floors, expanding Free Spirit Media's reach and helping to amplify more youth voices. Today's event demonstrated the inspiring potential of the collective impact we can make with our partner organizations who will also call this historic building home. We hope you will come visit to see the beautiful restoration and amazing city views at the Nichols Tower at Homan Square.

Homan Square

For one weekend only on October 17 and 18, the Chicago Architecture Foundation in partnership with Homan Square will host the annual Open House Chicago (OHC), a free public event that offers participants behind-the-scenes access to over 150 of the city’s greatest spaces and places and illuminates areas that are normally open “by invitation only.”

The original Sears Tower and Sear Power House will be open again this year. Whether you are an architecture buff, history enthusiast or looking for a unique weekend festival, OHC is a must-see event and is fun for every kind of adventurer: locals and visitors to suburbanites and city dwellers. Wear your walking shoes – to see one of the best views of the City, you will need to walk up to the 14th floor of the Tower!

We hope you come not only tour the buildings but to find out more about the past, present and future of the neighborhood surrounding the buildings and how the buildings are currently being used.

For the latest news on OHC and Homan Square, visit us at www.homansquare.org or check us out on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/#!/HomanSquare

Access to OHC sites is free and does not require a reservation. Sites will accept visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. For a complete list of participating sites, visit http://openhousechicago.org/sites/.

We hope to see you again on October 17th or 18th, from 11 am – 4 pm.
