We’re demanding to know whether the Social Security Administration is sharing information with immigration enforcement authorities. Federal law protects the confidentiality of tax information, but when it comes to this administration, we can’t just assume the government is following the law.

Warrantless Surveillance Under Section 702 of FISA

The Senate is voting today on whether or not to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Under Section 702, the U.S. government engages in mass, warrantless surveillance of Americans’ and foreigners’ phone calls, text messages, emails, and other electronic communications. Information collected under the law without a warrant can be used to prosecute and imprison people, even for crimes that have nothing to do with national security.

We strongly oppose those efforts and call on Congress to significantly reform the law, or allow it to sunset. Call your Senators now to oppose this reauthorization before the vote later today!

Unannounced inspections of five immigration jails found widespread abuse, including unnecessary strip searches, moldy food, and unsafe conditions.

This is part of a longstanding pattern of abuse by ICE. We need accountability now.

The federal courts are recognizing what everyone already knows to be true: President Trump’s impulsive #TransBan was blatantly unconstitutional. This is the first decision striking down President Trump’s ban, but it won’t be the last. As all of these cases move forward, the ACLU will continue to work to ensure that transgender service members receive the equal treatment they deserve.

Muslim Ban 3.0 Is Heading to Court — Here’s What You Need to Know Right Now

https://www.aclu.org/blog/immigrants-rights/muslim-ban-30-heading-court-heres-what-you-need-know-right-now

This Monday, we are back in court, fighting to block Muslim Ban 3.0 before it can go into effect on October 18, 2017. President Trump’s latest proclamation is largely the same as his first two bans, in terms of who will suffer, but worse — because it has no end date. Read our legal analysis here:

Opinion | The Racist Origins of Felon Disenfranchisement

The ACLU's huge effort to engage its members and donors into grassroots politics is largely centered around its voter restoration campaign, an ongoing project to ensure and protect voting rights.

Right now the ACLU is focused on ending Florida’s felon disenfranchisement law by changing the state Constitution. Overall, the goal is to put a “Voter Restoration Amendment” on the November 2018 ballot.

Some background on Florida's felon disenfranchisement: Florida, Kentucky and Iowa are the only states where felony convictions permanently strip the offender of voting rights pending special clemency hearings. In 2016, the nonpartisan Sentencing Project estimated that 1.68 million Florida residents had been stripped of voting rights.

Read up some more on the problematic history of felon disenfranchisement here:

Laws that stripped felons of the vote were designed to target African-Americans.

Why the ACLU Has Called for an Investigation but Not Impeachment Now

"While the allegations of obstruction of justice and collusion with the Russians to affect the electoral process could, if proved true, constitute grounds for impeachment, we believe, guided by our commitments to the rule of law and the presumption of innocence, that the facts as we know them to this point warrant investigation, but not impeachment. The allegations are grave, to be sure. But allegations are not established facts."

ACLU Legal Director, David Cole, who will be on campus next Thursday!

The recent credible allegations that President Donald Trump sought to interfere with an ongoing investigation regarding Russia’s meddling in the U.S. election, and the Trump campaign’s potential collusion therein, have prompted some to call for the president’s impeachment. ACLU Comment on Appointment of Special Counsel on Russia Investigation

"It is critical that the investigation encompass not just Russia’s interference in the election, but also the Trump administration’s apparent efforts to interfere with that investigation. And it remains critical that a select congressional committee take up the matter, because only such a committee can give this issue the public airing that it warrants, given the serious questions about the rule of law and presidential misconduct that are involved.”

WASHINGTON — American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Anthony D. Romero issued the following statement on the appointment of Robert Mueller to serve as special counsel for the Russia investigation: “We welcome the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia’s meddling in our elec...

ACLU Comment on Trump Firing of FBI Director Comey

"President Trump’s dismissal of Comey raises questions about the administration’s inappropriate meddling in bureau operations — precisely at a time when the bureau appears to be investigating the president, his advisors, and his campaign for potential collusion with Russian agents in our last election.”

WASHINGTON — American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Anthony D. Romero issued the following statement on the firing of FBI Director James Comey:

Federal Court Calls Trump’s Threats to Defund Sanctuary Cities Unconstitutional

"The principles underlying the court’s decision are constitutional bedrock. The Constitution divides power between the federal government and the states, and among the three branches of the federal government, to ensure that no single person or government will ever have the power to eliminate the rights and freedoms we all cherish. Those values were vindicated by the ruling yesterday. Today, cities, counties, states, and individuals around the country are breathing a sigh of relief that those principles and our courts remain steadfast."

For months, the Trump administration has tried to bully local communities into signing up to become extensions of the federal deportation system. That campaign of threats and public shaming based on flawed data — which has been mostly unsuccessful — suffered another major blow yesterday.
