Why Social Media Matters in Business Today

Sure, social media is fun—but how does it actually impact business growth? Find out on our blog. http://hubs.ly/H01SbdB0

You know the importance of social media in staying in touch with your
family and friends. But are you using it to keep your marketing operating
at its optimal level?

For companies large and small, a social media presence is integral to
success. It increases your visibility, becomes a platform to share
information to your potential leads and buyers and provides opportunities
to interact with your current customers. But unless you’re using it
strategically, social media can have little—or even negative—impact on your
business.

It’s essential for companies of all sizes today to pay attention to social
media. But how do you get started on getting your social media up to date?

Find (and train) the right employees

While many people have experience managing their own Facebook accounts,
it’s very different being in charge of a company profile. The employees you
have leading your social media marketing need to know not only what content
is appropriate to post and when, but how to optimize posts according to
SEO, build communities by isolating thought leaders and potential leads and
create meaningful ad campaigns.

If you’re lacking the talent within your organization to do this, it’s time
to get up to speed. You can hire from outside easily, but a good social
media manager who already understands your brand is more likely to be found
within your ranks. Identify a few talented members of your marketing team
and take the time to train them on the specifics of social media marketing.
Soon, you’ll have the talent needed to get your social media presence
optimized and competitive.

Develop an internal social media policy

Just like your social media marketers need to know how to speak as your
brand, your employees need to know how to talk about your company on their
own social media channels. What information can they share on their own
social channels? How should they talk about the company while staying true
to their own personalities? Can they even disclose that they work for you?

Take a look at some of these social media policies from successful
companies. All promote healthy discourse between employers and employees
while providing guidelines for what employees should steer away from in
their social media postings.

Learn from past wins and mistakes

Businesses of all sizes have social media presences, so take a look at what
your competitors are doing. Take note: what seems to endear audiences to
their brand? Look also at brands that you think have similar marketing
strategies to yours and see how they translate their tactics onto social
media.

Take a look at this list of top companies using social media. While they’re
all different in terms of industry and how they interact with their fans on
social, you’ll start to see some trends: prompt responses to fan questions
and comments, a focus on one or two social media platforms in order to not
dilute the power of their brands, and strong visual, video and written
content.

Compare that with this list of the worst corporate social media blunders
of 2014. Here, you’ll find tone-deafness, a lack of audience awareness and
a lack of basic social media skills as the common elements. While this may
be good for a laugh, this list is more than just a warning of what not to
do on social: it’s a reminder of how essential it is to get your employees
social media-savvy to grow and protect your brand.

Time is short. Make sure you enter 2016 with a well-conceived social media
campaign. A strong, engaged social presence is important because you need
it to make people aware of your company whatever their means of acquiring
information. It also shows that yours is a company that understands its
customer base and how they like to be kept in the know.
