Chicago-Kent Student Humanitarian Network

Chicago-Kent Student Humanitarian Network Each year, Chicago-Kent College of Law students travel with the Student Humanitarian Network to New Orleans to volunteer. Law students from across the country formed the Student Hurricane Network (SHN), a national association dedicated to providing assistance to communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
(4)

The legal questions and problems facing the individuals and communities throughout the Gulf Coast region were monumental in scale, and remain so even now. SHN dissolved at the national level in 2005, but the Chicago-Kent SHN organization has continued to support and organize Chicago-Kent students who are interested in providing assistance to legal agencies. In an effort to respond to the evolving and diverse needs of the community in New Orleans and other communities our organization has formally changed our name to the Student Humanitarian Network. SHN works with students at Chicago-Kent to coordinate travel and fundraising efforts for service trips to New Orleans. SHN is also pursuing opportunities for students to volunteer at legal organizations in the Chicago area, as well as volunteer opportunities within the community. These trips provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about pro bono service and public interest law. They also give students a chance to build relationships with each other and with other law students from around the country.

“Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tireless and resolute champion of justice." It is with great solemn that the Student Humanitarian Network joins in mourning the loss of a giant in the universe, Justice Ginsburg. In her 27 years on the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg served as a beacon of hope and progress; she was not only a staunch trailblazer of women’s rights but championed progressive rulings that ultimately garnered her the name of “the liberal dynamo.” May she Rest In Peace.

Shes go with the flow; the life of the ~philanthropic~ party. How fitting for Director of Programming! 💫 🎊

Allow me to introduce Kirstin Mathers!

“I have been involved with SHN since my 1L year and had the great opportunity to serve as the previous year’s Treasurer. Prior to law school, I graduated from Marquette University in 2017 with a double major in Psychology and Spanish, and a minor in Writing-Intensive English. As a humanitarian, I am passionate about advocating on behalf of individuals, particularly individuals whose voices are often suppressed or go unheard.”

Accordingly, she is interested in pursuing a career in employment and immigration law.

“When I become a licensed attorney, I would like to incorporate trauma-informed advocacy into my practice because compassion and empathy are vital to ensuring that individuals feel safe enough to share their story and attain justice.”

KM wants to continue helping the SHN community and will do so by serving as a resource to both our school, and to the community at large. She looks forward to continuing to bring this organization’s mission to life through our many events and outreach this coming year.

To the Student Humanitarian Network Membership and its Supporters:

As we continue to mourn and demand justice for the brutal killing of George Floyd, as well as countless Black lives taken at the hands of law enforcement preceding and following George Floyd, we would like to call your attention to ways you can aide in the pursuit of justice, in the fight against systematic racism and oppression of members of the Black community. The Student Bar Association has shared a comprehensive list of organizations that are in desperate need of assistance, which you can find here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xDOQ5byip5CUVYJ6e7T8S8HZAvp19cgiMR797IV7YsU/edit).

As more resources become available, we will continue to update our membership via email and social media. If you would like to proffer additional opportunities as to how our membership can aide in this pursuit, please message us via email or social media.

As an organization of people who have expressed their dedication to serving historically marginalized populations through the spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy, we encourage you to continue those efforts by staying informed, supporting this movement, and standing in solidarity with the Black community.

Nicholas Lira Lisle
SHN President

The Student Humanitarian Network is proud to announce that it was awarded the “Service Trip Leadership Award” by the Chicago-Kent College of Law Public Interest Awards Committee. Accepting on the organization’s behalf was three-time trip attendee and 2019-2020 President Gabriel Lara.

In response to natural disasters Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, law students from across the country formed the Student Hurricane Network (SHN), a then national association dedicated to providing relief to communities devastated by the hurricanes. For the immediate period following Katrina and Rita, the organization was tasked with supporting the communities most devastated thru pro bono legal services. To aid in this mission, Chicago-Kent established a local chapter of its own. Once the Student Hurricane Network dissolved, students at Chicago-Kent were interested in continuing to provide service to the Greater New Orleans community; thus, the Student Hurricane Network transformed into Student Humanitarian Network. Ever since, Chicago-Kent students have traveled annually during their winter break to the New Orleans community to provide pro-bono legal services to the indigent population. In recent years, students have volunteered at the Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, the Pro-Bono Project, and the Orleans Public Defenders Office.

The Chicago-Kent students who have attended the annual trip have dedicated so much of their time, knowledge, skills, and abilities, to provide service to “The Big Easy,” and we could not be more honored to have been recognized by Chicago-Kent for their hard work and dedication to altruism.

Thank you, to the Public Interest Awards Committee, and thank you to our hard-working members.

The Student Humanitarian Network would like to extend a warm round of applause to its members who graduated yesterday. In addition to pursuing their legal studies, these altruistic individuals dedicated countless hours of their (lack of) free time to serve the people of Chicago and New Orleans. Nelson Mandela once said, "We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference," a message obviously well-received by the incredibly bright, service-oriented folks we are now proud to call alumni.

We are excited for you to endeavor on your next journey. Please keep us posted on exciting life updates so we can share in the excitement.

Good luck, congratulations, and keep making the world a better place.
