Gemeinsam gegen das Coronavirus.

Sehr geehrte Auslandsösterreicherinnen und Auslandsösterreicher,
Sehr geehrte Reisende,

No-Place Like the Future – Virtual Vernissage
Thursday, June 18, 2020

Over the past eight weeks, more than 30 artists of various fields, based in Austria and the United States, teamed up to create artworks addressing a world after the coronavirus pandemic. Join us for a virtual vernissage featuring interviews with the artists and an experimental interactive gallery tour (MAKE.SPACE, created by digital artists Jens Vetter and Aza Raskin), where the outcomes of our transatlantic collaborations will be revealed and questions can be asked by the audience.

Among the works is the animated video “Sequence of Tenses” by visual artist Adele Razkövi and novelist and co-founder of an app for writers Vikram Chandra, which features a message from the past, and a direction for the future. We also see pianist Kenny Werner philosophize about the state of mind in a utopian situation, where compassion, the love for one another, love for oneself and the end of all self-criticism are key, captured by filmmaker Erwin Wagenhofer in a short film. Artist, writer and curator Walter Seidl and visual artist Francis Ruyter present a series of photos of deserted, empty public places, telling the visual story of stay-at-home orders, the void created by this health crisis and drawing attention to the precarious situation of “essential” seasonal agricultural workers. Cartoonist and art teacher Doris Schamp together with artist Phil Savenick assemble a group of young creatives to help us visualize a better tomorrow. Their video “Visions of The Future” ends on the high note that “science will get us out of this pandemic, but it is art, that will get us through it”.

"This project proved once again that artists are our visionary guides to the future – in particular in times of crisis. The artworks that have been created are stories of resilience, positivity and community building and give us hope for the times ahead", said Martin Weiss, Ambassador of Austria to the United States and one of the co-organizers of the project.

No-Place Like the Future – Artists Evoke a World After Corona is a cultural project created by the Austrian diplomatic missions in the United States (Embassy of Austria Washington, DC, Austrian Cultural Fora in Washington, DC, and New York, Austrian Consulate-General Los Angeles, as well as Open Austria, Austria’s innovation office in San Francisco) in order to preserve transatlantic cultural exchange and dialogue in times of a global pandemic. The project is funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

Learn more about the project, all the participating artists, and the creative process for the joint artworks at www.noplacelikethefuture.org/.

Join us for a virtual and interactive vernissage where we will reveal the wonderful outcomes of our transatlantic collaborations and you will also have a chance to meet the artists! Our special guests include our host, Ambassador Martin Weiss, Austria's Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Te...

It is with a heavy heart that we report that Karl Nika, a significant pillar and dedicated member of the Austrian community in Chicago for many decades since he arrived from Austria has passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. He will be missed by our community. A memorial has not yet been planned because of the current COVID related situation.

See the following from the German International School that its fundraising Gala has been postponed because of COVID-19:

Dear GISC Families and Friends,

I hope this email finds everyone doing well.

I write today to inform you that - given the current state of affairs in the world and the uncertainty of when this all might pass - we've made the decision to postpone our 2020 Gala.

From GISC With Love will be postponed to Spring 2021 and we are in the process right now of confirming the new date with the Ravenswood Event Center.

As you can imagine, this was not an easy decision to make, but it is the one we feel is the most responsible decision in light of our current circumstances. Postponing the 2020 Gala also means we are postponing our plans for playground renovations until next summer, as a significant portion of the funds anticipated to be raised from Gala were earmarked to provide the financing for this project. Despite this postponement, we are in a good position over the coming months to work with our vendor to put together a solid project plan for the renovation, complete with renderings and a full-scope project budget, and we look forward to presenting this to our community at the 2021 Gala.

The 2020 Gala Host Committee is working closely with me to determine if there is a community-focused, virtual option that we might implement at some point later this Spring to raise funds for the school that could help mitigate the impact of not hosting our Gala this year. We are monitoring the situation and will make a call on this as the times allow us, so please stay tuned for details.

If you made a contribution or bought tickets for the 2020 Gala, our Director of Development Jaclyn Stacy will be individually following up with you shortly to discuss how you wish to have us proceed with your gift. At this point, your Gala purchase/donation can either be transformed into a contribution to the 2019-2020 Annual Fund campaign or fully refunded.

I want to thank the members of the 2020 Gala Host Committee for all of the hard work they've done this year to ensure From GISC With Love will be the best GISC Gala yet, even if the times are requiring us to dance another day. Lastly, I want to thank all of you for continuing to support our school and for your ongoing commitment to our community.

Stay safe and well!

Best,

Petra Obritzberger
