We recently completed a Milestone session with new and existing leaders at American Aluminum Extrusion. The Milestone session is the midway point in our People Leader Academy curriculum, in which participants speak up about 1) how they've grown as a leader, 2) reflect on what they've learned about themselves, and 3) set the tone for what matters most to them for the 2nd half of the curriculum.

During this session, I also have leaders draw a self-portrait, write five words to accurately describe themselves, exchange with someone else, and conclude by asking everyone to spend a moment writing something positive on each picture. WHY: How you see yourself is a strong indicator of what you value, what's missing, and where you can go. It's all perspective!

When we wrap up the curriculum, leaders will be asked again to draw a portrait of themselves. It's amazing what we discover! There's power in helping individuals embrace their power and potential.

As an organization, returning back to normalcy may be a foregone conclusion. The pandemic continues to disrupt the way we function, how we work, communicate, and make decisions. We successfully kicked off the AAE People Leader Academy this week. Over the past 15 months, I have had the privilege to work with an awesome group of new and existing people leaders from SPX FLOW, Inc. We built a leadership roadmap customized to the needs of the organization, and most importantly, the individuals that help keep production moving forward. Along the way, we had to adapt, as most of us have, to the changing demands the pandemic placed on our path. Yet, we persisted. The program's success was driven by the collaborative efforts, time, patience, and energy of every individual who participated in the People Leader Academy. We did it together!

Thank you Bernie Luecke Rock Valley College and the Leadership Team at SPX FLOW, Inc. Flow for the willingness to invest in your people. Often, when instability and economic downturns happen, organizations move away from investing in training. That wasn’t the case here. They understand how important their people are to surviving the uncertainties of our current global economy. They want leaders who can think critically, resolve conflict, communicate to be understood, work collaboratively, and self-manage their time and energy to get work done. It was all about continuous improvement and each of the graduates demonstrated their commitment to this goal.

"Be willing and open to be taught" is a life experience that pays itself forward each and every time I get the good fortune of learning with professionals that want the best for themselves, their audience, their community.

Cultural awareness, appreciation, appropriation, and humility are just some of the poignant points we discussed during our Cultural Awareness & Diversity Training workshop. Thank you to @chez Chez Ordoñez @REGALISMGMT and Antonio Mannings MA, PMP®, CSM® for helping co-facilitate an outstanding workshop. As a group, we evaluated our cultural competence, strengths, challenges, and growth opportunities. Most importantly, we created a safe space where everyone in participation could share and learn from others their vulnerabilities and start the process of rebuilding actionable steps to become more culturally aware, competent, and tolerant.

This would not be possible without the commitment from Waukegan Public Schools, College of Lake County, and all the amazing Language Liaisons and staff to help make this an impactful half-day event.

One final point, "When we label something, we lose our capability to understand it fully." Be willing to ask enough questions so you can be as informed as possible.

The company was originally started in 2003 to provide women and minority-owned businesses access to professional & business development skills training in Charlotte, North Carolina, and surrounding areas. Under the name Bailey Consulting Group, LLC., Dr Sean Bailey, founder, discovered that many of the small business owners in lower socio-economic sectors of the city were under-skilled with regards to general business operations, marketing, and financial accounting. Yet, many of the programs offered in the area were advance level resources catering to a more seasoned business-minded sector of the community. Rebranded BCG-North America Corporation in 2015, Dr Bailey started scaling the vision, “To create a level playing field where every person can be empowered to lead themselves when provided sustainable resources” to a wider audience; including youth, young adults, women, veterans, and minorities.
