General information

The Edwin C. Shanahan Memorial Post #1920 ("Chicago FBI Explorers") is a not-for-profit Section 501(c)(3) organization, and is not part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The purpose of the Post is to provide Chicago-area students with a better understanding of law enforcement agencies and the precepts of the law, while helping them become better leaders in their communities and throughout the world. The Post educates the students in learning segments. Seven learning sessions were completed in the first semester that began in August 2012. Six additional sessions are taught in the second semester, leading up to their graduation. The Memorial Post is building on the curiosities and the passion that students have for the laws of the Constitution and the overall enforcement of the laws in the United States. Students gain additional education and confidence in themselves and their abilities through an experience rather than just reading directly out of a book. Upon completion of all curriculum requirements, the students are able to bring one family member to the FBI facilities on their graduation for a one-of-kind experience to reward their achievement. Young men and women are afforded the opportunity to pursue additional education in law enforcement precepts. The experience provides students with additional insight into a career in law enforcement, while enriching their understanding law enforcement’s role in the United States of America. The hands-on exercises also build confidence and further develop the leadership abilities of the motivated students. The FBI collaborates with local law enforcement agencies to give students hands-on exercises, also build confidence, and further develop the leadership abilities of the motivated students. The students, their families and friends, the schools, and communities all benefit from the enhanced educational experience the Memorial Post provides, strengthening the community as a whole and building life-long relationships within those communities. The curriculum is designed to supplement the development of the leaders of the future. Students are provided an introduction to the FBI selection process, the history and organization of the FBI, law principles, investigative basics, exposure to the counterintelligence, counterterrorism and criminal fields, evidence response and collection, negotiator basics, interview and interrogations, law enforcement partnerships exposure, and weapons familiarization. FBI personnel volunteer their time working with the youths in the community and with the Post's layperson Board of Directors. We are a community outreach program, helping to educate motivated youths in the community. The services provided by the Memorial Post and its volunteers directly affect the human health and welfare of high school students in the Chicago area. FBI Explorer posts are subsidiaries of Learning for Life that participate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a community outreach activity. They are not part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Edwin C. Shanahan Memorial Post #1920 is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and is not part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
