We are so honored to be working in Cook County with healthcare workers who are doing similar innovative and heart felt work in the midst of the pandemic. This is fantastic, Oregon health workers! You guys are amazing!!!!

When a team of Oregon health-care workers stuck in traffic during a snowstorm was running out of time to administer leftover doses of the Moderna vaccine, one local public health official had an idea: Vaccinate strangers in the middle of the highway.

For your intermission today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU3cGLtULeI

I have been listening to Rhiannon Giddens for awhile now and stumbled across this song "Cry No More" that she wrote in the wake of the massacre at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, NC. Her video of the song includes this: "Know Your History; Know Your Mind; Speak Up; Be Loud" Yes, yes, yes, YES!

The massacre at the Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, in June is just the latest in a string of racially charged events that have broken my h...

Hey Folks. As we approach the end of the year, those of us in the nonprofit world are gearing up for year-end giving campaigns and plans for 2018. When MCFG's Mac Grambauer hosted an Advocacy 101 salon session at the office at the beginning of the year, two things came up that the group seemed interested in learning more about: how to join/what is expected of a nonprofit board and its members, and how to figure out the best way to spend your donation dollars. Recently, there has also been a surge of folks interested in some more advocacy tips/support. So we are considering hosting another salon session at the MCFG offices regarding the triad of people's power: how to act (advo 101), how to give (donation basics), and how to lead (nonprofit and other public entity board membership.

So the question for YOU is: are you/would you be interested in coming to something like this?

Other important details: food and drink would be provided, we would ask for a suggested donation of $5-$15 dollars (to offset the cost of food, drinks, materials), and it would likely be a weeknight evening early (first week) in December. Feel free to contact Mac Grambauer with questions, and please let us know if this is something you'd be interested in.

Nonprofit AF shared an excerpt from this in the blog this morning. For those of us in the nonprofit world, those of us organizing our communities, friends, neighbors, those of us trying to figure out how to be advocates and activists in a world of madness, Clarissa's words may provide some comfort.

"Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good.

What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.

One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these - to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity.

Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do."

My friends, do not lose heart. We were made for these times. I have heard from so many recently who are deeply and properly bewildered. They are concerned about the state of affairs in our world now. Ours is a time of almost daily astonishment and often righteous rage over the latest degradations…

Great op-ed by Marisa Novara at the Metropolitan Planning Council. Really resonates with my experiences as a white person when I speak about race with some other white people. I really want to keep the conversation going.

We can't address race-related issues if white people don't see their own whiteness as a race.

"“[R]ight-wing funders are offering support with fewer strings attached, with an eye toward the long-term health of the conservative movement. While progressive funders tend to support specific projects […] conservative funders are more likely to focus on leadership development, capacity building, or to give unrestricted funds. […] This has paid off through a new generation of conservative elected officials, judges, and thought leaders who have been trained by a well-oiled conservative leadership pipeline.”"

08/14/2017

We should all be embracing our collective anger. We as a sector need to get angrier at the ridiculous expectations put on us, like society’s destructive insistence on low “overhead” and on “sustainability,” which ties our hands while people suffer and die. We need to get angrier at funders’ risk-aversion and 5% minimum payout and lengthy processes and intellectualizing while people are getting deported and children are being torn from their parents. We need to be angrier at leaders who want to play it safe, who refuse to see race, while people are threatened with N**i salutes and Confederate flags and references to ovens. We should be angrier at donors and fundraisers who insist on seeing the people most affected by systemic inequity as “others” and the object for pity and condescension, not justice. We must still be grounded by Grace as a sector, but we need to channel more Anger.
