Over half Syrian refugees in Lebanon in 'extreme poverty': UN

"More than half of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon are now living in extreme poverty, and the vast majority live below the poverty line, the UN's refugee agency said Friday."

"According to the UN, more than a million Syrians have sought refuge in Lebanon since the war in their country erupted after anti-government protests in March 2011."

"The massive influx has tested Lebanon, a country of just four million citizens that already struggled with overstretched resources before the arrival of Syrian refugees."

"Over the last six years of the war, the refugee population has sunk further into debt and poverty, UNHCR said, with 58 percent of households now living in extreme poverty, defined as less than $2.87 per person a day."

Reflections of ongoing HRSI work with Syrian asylum seekers

"Recently I had the opportunity to attend the LatCrit Biennial Conference in Orlando, Florida to present on an article in progress written by myself and my former professor,
Sarah Dávila-Ruhaak.

This article will address the social and economic vulnerabilities of asylum seekers and asylees in the US. Presenting at this conference was an incredible experience that allowed me to discuss my work at the JMLS International Human Rights Clinic’s Human Rights for Syrians Initiative, while getting feedback on the article. It was very inspiring to engage with and learn from likeminded legal scholars and other human rights activists. I made some valuable connections and was able to learn a lot from the other panelists and presenters.

I hope to be apart of this conference again in the future.

With great sorrow in our hearts, we say goodbye to Professor Cherif Bassiouni. Professor Bassiouni was a distinguished scholar in international criminal law and was instrumental in the creation of the International Criminal Court. He was often called “the father of international criminal law.”

Professor Bassiouni helped found the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University College of Law and was a very distinguished alum of LLM program at The John Marshall Law School.

Political empowerment not a priority for Syrian refugee women

"I was convinced that, as a refugee, I had some sort of rights in the country that welcomed me. For this reason, I searched for a job with local organizations that support refugee women," she says. "Despite encountering all types of harassment during the first year, I did not give up. My goal was to find a job in one of these organizations. I wanted to help prevent other refugee women from going through what I had been through. I wanted them to receive help and support with dignity."

Supreme Court Takes Up Travel Ban Case, and Allows Parts to Go Ahea

"WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court cleared the way on Monday for President Trump to prohibit the entry of some people into the United States from countries he deems dangerous, but the justices imposed strict limits on Mr. Trump’s travel ban while they examine the scope of presidential power over the border."
