Chatham Enrichment Center - CEC

The CEC strives to enrich the holistic lives of students by providing engaging educational and cultural experiences with an emphasis on music and the arts.

The Chatham Enrichment Center is developed to promote the educational advancement for our youth in the Chatham and surrounding neighborhoods. We provide well-rounded educational programs including: comprehensive music instruction, creative and performing arts opportunities, tutorial/homework assistance, foreign language classes, technology enhancement, job readiness initiatives, and other support services for children between the ages of 5 and 18 from various demographic backgrounds and ability levels. The Chatham Enrichment Center fosters an environment that is safe, nurturing, and rich with holistic developmental opportunities.

Mission: Our mission is to become the educational empowerment center for the youth of south Chicagoland by providing tutoring, instructional courses in music, arts, technology, career readiness, and life skills.

The Chatham Enrichment Center would like to thank all of our families and community members for their support since 2015. However, the CEC will not be conducting a summer enrichment program this year. Nevertheless, Camp Hype, brought to you in part by one of CEC's founding members Stacy True, will be in full effect! This new summer enrichment program will be conducted in the same location as the previous CEC summer enrichment program. Please see the following advertisments for more information! ❤

Dear Families,
It is with great pleasure to introduce the newest addition to the CEC family Ms. Vanessa Winston!
Over the last few weeks I have enjoyed spending time with my newly expanded family as well as recieving calls from various CEC family members and your refferals in regards to our previous summer enrichment program. I know the time is here where parents are seeking quality programming for their children this summer. It was my intent to return as the Executive Director for the Summer Enrichment Program 2018. However, due to the wonderful new addition to our family, I will be unavailable to oversee the facilitation of a summer program this year. If I hear of any quality programming in the area, I will keep you posted on this page. Stay blessed,

Dear Parents,
The Directors of the Chatham Enrichment Center would like to thank our families for 2 years of great summer memories! Unfortunantly due to conflicting work schedules, the directors will be unavailable to facilitate the CEC'S 2017 Summer Enrichment Program. We are sorry for any inconveniences. Citizens in Science field trip! Our students worked with biologists and wildlife professinalists to track coyotes and identify and find different species of birds at the beautiful Turtle head Lake in Palos Heights!

West Town Bikes! Our students learned a wide range of topics all about bicycles from instructors from West Town Bikes. Our students learned essential STEM skills such as bike maintenance and repair and using a grid to get around Chicago. Our students learned how to find, patch, and repair flat bicycle tires just in case that is ever needed. All students left with a Safe Cycling informational booklet.

Garfield Park Observatory Field trip! Students took a trip to the largest and most stunning conservatories in the nation. Students took advantage of the historic and botanic beauty of the conservatory on such a beautiful summer day!

Going Places with Mad Science of Chicago! Airplanes, trains and bicycle chains. Our students discovered how to get from here to there by exploring the science of navigation, engines, and four forces of flight, and more.

Trains, Planes, Automobiles with High Touch High Tech! Our students found out how much fun physics and engineering are as they made discoveries about motion, force, friction, gravity and flight. Our 2nd-3rd graders tested toy cars on ramps with different surfaces to try and reduce friction. They also built a prototype car that they tested and took home.

Apple Technologies! This week our digital media majors took a field trip to the downtown Apple Store on Michigan Ave. Students engaged in a workshop with Apple technologies educational coordinator Emir, to use iPad Pros to create various digital artifacts. Students learned and created movie trailers using iMovie, artistic expressions using Sketch, and music beats using Garage Band. At the end of the first of our 2 part workshop series, students were given an Apple t-shirt and an apple USB wristband. Finished products of the students work at Apple will premiere at our end of summer showcase!

Quiet on the set, and Action!..... what a week it's been for our digital media majors! They had the opportunity to be instructed by well renoenowned cinematographer Jim Kropp from Shine on Chicago as he introduced concepts from operating HD cameras and lighting for green screen to how to edit a digital story in Final Cut Pro X. Our students were able to get behind the camera to serve as videographers for a video that will be edited and displayed on our You Tube channel.

Introducing our newest published writers of the CEC! At our recent field trip to Open Book Chicago, our 6-8th graders engaged in a creative writing workshop in which they created poetry pieces of their dreams for the future. Their poetic creations has been submitted and will be edited and published by the Open Book Publishing Company. Each student will recieve a copy of their published book and other copies will be available for purchase to the public! Be on the lookout for an exclusive book signing party with our young authors very soon! :)

Parents, educators, and science enthusiasts alike all had a blast at the You Be The Chemist Workshop this past weekend. We had a great time participating in the many science stations that encouraged the 5E's in learning (Engagement, Exploration,Explanation, Elaboration,and Evaluation) . Parents got to get a taste of what our CEC kids will be doing during our STEM rotations this summer and left with the curriculum to do many projects at home! Thank you for coming out and we hope to provide the workshop again before the end of the summer!

Interested in learning new techniques to get your child or student engaged in science? If so, come join us this Monday, May 15th from 2-5pm for the You Be The Chemist Essential Elements workshop. This workshop presented by certified instructors from the Chemistry Education Foundation will provide parents and teachers with the tools they need to conduct fun interactive experiments using common household products. All are welcome to this fun, informative, and interactive workshop. Refreshements will be provided and CPDU's will be given to educators at the completion of the workshop. The Chatham Enrichment Center is pleased to partner with University of Chicago Perinatal Center, Caring Connections, and the Schweitzer Fellowship to facilitate the support group session "Taking Care of Yourself" during pregnancy and infant loss at the CEC March 17th, from 6:15-8:15pm. A light dinner will be served and babysitting services will be available. If you or anyone you know has suffered prenatal loss of the loss of an infant, we invite you to come out to our next support session, Register today at [email protected] (include full name # of children and guests).

Come join us on a family and friends fundraising outing to the
UIC Flames Men’s Basketball game vs. Oakland
Sunday, February 21st at 4pm.

Cost is only $9 and includes game ticket, bus transportation, and a light snack! The bus will leave at 2:45pm. Invite any and all family and friends for this fun weekend outing! The Chatham Enrichment Center invites you to a fun family outing to the Chicago Children's Museum on Thursday, October 22nd. The bus will depart the center at 5:00pm and will return at 7:30pm. We would like to invite you all out for a family outing to the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, October 10th from 2:00-7:00pm. Transportation and a sack lunch will be provided. Jazz in the park! Our students were educated on the benefits of learning how to play a musical instrument and to appreciate different musical styles by our musician to the stars, Mr. Larry Bowen. After his short presentation he taught the students the fundamentals of playing the trumpet and our k-2 group had the opportunity to play! # Brass music lessons CEC Summer Enrichment program 2016!
