The Indo-American Center and the Alderperson Andre Vasquez, 40th Ward Chicago are thrilled to share the success of our recent Know Your Rights event!

A two-day presentation series was conducted in Spanish for the immigrant community including the recent arrivals. They gained valuable knowledge about their rights when interacting with law enforcement, understanding the U.S. immigration system, navigating the complexities of public charge, and how to be a model citizen.

We at the Indo-American Center are dedicated to providing our community with the resources and knowledge they need to thrive. We're proud to have facilitated this important series and empower individuals to protect themselves advocate for their rights, and connect them to vital resources.

It was an insightful session where we explored strategies to safeguard against fraud and ensure support reaches those who truly need it. 🎃🌟We are thrilled to share some updates about our Community Health Fair at the Indo-American Center! 🌟 🎃

A heartwarming total of 49 community members received free wellness screenings, 43 individuals received their Covid vaccine and 67 individuals got their Flu shots. In total, 82 community members vaccinated and 110 shots administered. It was a day full of care and protection!

But that’s not all! The event was buzzing with activities, where smiles were made brighter with goodie bags for the kids, and spirits were lifted with delicious food and refreshments for all. The joy and appreciation from the community members were the true highlights of the day.

We are Citizenship Teacher at the Indo American Center!

Our purpose is not to only prepare students for the path to citizenship. We aim to build civic and community engagement skills empowering students to be advocates for their community, even after becoming a US citizen.

Part Time, 20 hrs; Salary range: $18-20/hour
SUMMARY:
> Teach in-person citizenship classes for students. Evening remote classes.
> Support Coordinator in the organization and implementation of classroom activities and curriculum, based on client need, English proficiency level and USCIS guidelines.
> Participate in outreach tasks and initiatives.
> Test prospective students for English language proficiency.
> Assist with training volunteers as needed
> Work with clients to prepare for the citizenship test through programmatic activities, including 1:1 or small group tutoring, and mock interviews.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
>Provide 1:1 and small group tutoring sessions during IAC business hours to students virtually and in-person, based on clients needs. As well as alternating Friday and Saturday sessions. (Saturdays will be 2x/month).
> Ability to teach multi-level English language citizenship tutoring or classes in an in-person learning setting, with potential for virtual/in-person tutoring as needed by students.
> Develop citizenship lessons with Citizenship Coordinator, which meet the language abilities of the clients and which prepare them for the citizenship process using prescribed curriculum and support materials.
> Provide one on one tutoring, or lead small group sessions, virtual and in-person per office hours schedule created with Dept Manager.
> Test prospective students for English language proficiency (pre-test and post-test) and support Citizenship Coordinator in referrals to ESL, SOS Program or Adult Literacy Program as needed.
> Work with Department Manager, and as needed with the other programs in the department, to develop civics field experiences
>Assist students with preparing for the citizenship test, including mock interviews and scheduling and leading tutoring support.
> Document student progress, outcomes and update internal records, (i. e. spreadsheets) and report to the Citizenship Coordinator in a timely manner.
> Cooperate with the Department Manager and Citizenship Coordinator in cross program collaboration, such as training volunteers in program delivery.
> Work with program staff to evaluate programs, identify needs, and implement new services.
> Attend program and staff meetings and training.
> Assist with recruiting class participants, as needed.
> Other related duties as assigned by the Department Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:
> Excellent spoken and written English language skills.
> Fluency in any second language such as Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali/Bangla, Dari, Pashto, Rohingya, French or Arabic a plus
> Teaching or mentoring experience, with teaching citizenship and/or ESL classes. Preferably in a community-based setting a plus.
> Ability to develop lesson plans that responds to clients’ needs, empowers participants, and fulfills specific grant requirements.
> Computer skills including Zoom, database (like Salesforce), Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and email.
> Commitment to refugee and immigrant advocacy.
> Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
> Ability to work effectively with diverse program participants and staff.
> Respect for others’ experiences, opinions, language, values, culture, and knowledge
> Ability to stay organized and prioritize a high volume workload
> Demonstrated commitment to social justice and sensitivity to challenges of the immigrant community
> Able to come into the office as needed for in-person classes and activities.
> Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate experience.

IAC Mission: The Indo American Center (IAC) addresses the needs of South Asian immigrants as well as people from more than thirty countries around the world. IAC provides services that facilitate their adjustment, integration, and friendship with the wider society, nurture their sense of community, and foster an appreciation for the diversity of culture and heritage.

Job Summary: IAC Community Health Workers (CHWs) will support the South Asian community in Chicago and metro area in improving their health through outreach, education, trainings, and intervention. They will focus on connecting residents to the healthcare and mental healthcare systems, enrolling them in health insurance and public benefits, leading health education and wellness promotion activities, and helping residents access other resources that are needed to support healthy and sustainable families, regardless of their immigration status.

Status: Part-Time 15-20 hours per week, Non exempt
Reports to: Public Health Manager
Pay Rate: $18-20/hr commensurate with experience

JOB DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Conduct outreach and education to individuals who are in need of health care and social services to increase utilization of the healthcare system;
● Serve as community liaison and maintain relationships with key individuals in the community;
● Assist participants with obtaining access to health care and supportive services, including coordinating medical care with providers and facilitating appointments;
● Assist participants with maintaining relationships with care providers for follow-up screenings and treatment, and supporting adherence to program follow-up;
● Accurately complete reports as required;
● Participate in meetings, conferences and committees as assigned;
● Assist staff in collaborating with community health and social service providers and partner agencies to identify barriers and service gaps;
● Provide education, information and referrals to clients; locate, identify, and utilize new social services and resources;
● Maintain current knowledge of general health and wellness information, insurance coverage, and available services and resources;
● Maintain the highest level of client confidentiality, in person and in practice;
● Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
● Basic knowledge of health education, motivational strategies and an empathetic manner working with the underserved;
● Basic knowledge of healthcare systems;
● Ability to work with other members of the healthcare team and community to provide quality health care services;
● Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written;
● Ability to work with vulnerable populations in a non-judgmental manner;
● Possession of valid Illinois Driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle in course of employment;
● Bi-Lingual in English and other South Asian languages preferred, such as Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, or Bangla;
● High School diploma preferred or commensurate life experience;
● Familiarity with the West Ridge Community and/or South Asian immigrant community;
● Experience with computers and data entry and management; experience with databases is a plus;
● Experience with community outreach, community-based health education and/or public benefits enrollment is a plus;
● Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work in a collaborative fashion;
● Must be detail-oriented and able to work independently;
● Ability to work some evenings and weekends each month as required by the job.
