Ask someone who has been hurt by the Church what they think Jesus is like. Then read the Beatitudes again. The distance between those conversations should grieve us — because followers of Jesus should never become more recognizable for defending power than embodying mercy.”

In “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Frederick Douglass called out the truth America tried to hide: freedom wasn’t for all. Today, as we are entering a new season of cruelty and injustice, we echo Frederick’s sentiment.
