Starting in June, we are excited to offer beginning sewing workshops with Joshua Blane in the SCPL Makery! Our first workshop will be held on Saturday, June 13th at 11:00am. The cost to attend is $10 per person and registration is required. These workshops are open to adults as well as youth 12 and older. Call the library at 276-646-3404 to reserve a spot.

During this workshop, participants will cover the following topics:
● Identify the major parts of a sewing machine
● Thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin
● Understand how stitches are formed
● Distinguish between knit and woven fabrics
● Identify common beginner fabrics and their uses
● Read the basic information on a sewing pattern
● Sew straight lines and basic seams
● Demonstrate safe sewing practices

Joshua Blane graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, California with a degree in Apparel Design & Textile Science in. He has a combined 10 years of design experience, ranging from bespoke wedding gowns to costumes for the stage. Post-pandemic he moved back to his birthplace of SWVA to work as a curator at the William King Museum of Art, specializing in collection management that includes many historical Appalachian textiles such as quilts, samplers, and clothing. Most importantly- Joshua believes that sewing, mending, and needlecraft are enduring skills that should be maintained and passed down from generation to generation.

Wonderful STEM program today with Mr. Eskridge from the Outreach Educational Department of the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center! Our homeschool kids had a science lesson and created paper rockets and launched them indoors. Then everyone ventured out on the lawn to launch water rockets! This was such a fun morning and a great learning experience for everyone.

Coming up next week in the SCPL Makery! Create a custom "Treat Jar" for you pet. Christy will guide patrons through the process of creating a personalized design with the Cricut and then etching it onto glass. No experience is necessary.
🐯The cost for supplies is $2 per jar. Or you are welcome to bring your own glass jar and the etching supplies will be free.
🐾This activity is available to adults as well as youth 12 and older.

Join us for our last Homeschool Connection program of the spring season at Chilhowie Library this Friday, May 29th at 11:00am. This month we will host a fun Rocket Launching STEM program in conjunction with the Outreach Department of the SWVA Higher Ed Center.
✏While the kids are learning about rockets, the parents are encouraged to bring school materials that they are no longer using or want to trade with other families to our our *end of the school year materials swap*.

Grab your folding chairs or a blanket and join us on the lawn of Chilhowie Public Library on Thursday, June 11th for a Stargazing Party with Marc Eaton. Marc will begin the program at 8:00pm with a talk, and as the sun sets we will begin looking at the night sky together through telescopes.

🔭This is a free family-friendly program that is open to all ages. The event is dependent on favorable weather and viewing conditions that day. Marc will bring telescopes, but all the astronomy lovers out there are also encouraged to bring your own telescopes as well if you wish.

✨Marc Eaton is an astronomy enthusiast who works for Montgomery County Public Schools as an engineering instructor. He earned his degree in Earth/Space Physics at Radford University. He has been setting up telescopes and hosting planet and star gazing events for 20 years.

Coming up soon at the library! On Saturday, June 13th we will host a Pesto Making Workshop presented by Virginia Cooperative Extension from 11:00am - 1:00pm. Participants will learn how to make basil pesto the traditional Italian way as well as some other unique variations.
