Safety improvements are underway as part of the I-10 resurfacing project, from the Perdido River Bridge to the U.S. 29 interchange, in Escambia County.

Crews use specialized tools and equipment to install new guardrail along I-10.

In the first photo, the orange truck in the background is equipped with a hydraulic post driver. In the foreground, a high-lift jack stand with a red handle allows crews to lift and position the galvanized steel rail before it is bolted to the posts.

Guardrail installation requires careful measurements and precise alignment. Because this work is taking place at night, crews also use truck-mounted lighting to illuminate the work area and maintain visibility throughout the installation.

The I-10 resurfacing project is scheduled for completion in early 2027.

▪ Intermittent outside lane closures, between mile marker 4 and just west of the U.S. 29 interchange (Exit 10), for paving operations.

▪ Intermittent inside lane closures, near the Pine Forest Road interchange (Exit 7), for barrier wall and crash cushion installation.

All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.

⚠️ 𝐈-𝟏𝟎 𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 (𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭 𝟓) - Drivers will encounter the following construction-related traffic disruptions:

▪ Intermittent lane closures on I-10 westbound near the Nine Mile Road interchange, Sunday, Aug. 30 through Thursday, Sept. 3, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

▪ Nine Mile Road will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction between the I-10 ramps, Sunday, Aug. 30 through Saturday, Sept. 5, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Law enforcement will be on site, and directional signage will be in place to guide drivers through the work zone.

▪ Temporary reconfiguration of the I-10 westbound on-ramp, which will remain in place through mid-2026.

▪ I-10 eastbound travel lanes have been shifted to the north near the U.S. 29 interchange. This temporary traffic configuration is anticipated to remain in place through late 2026.

▪ I-10 is reduced to two travel lanes in each direction between U.S. 29 and I-110.

▪ The U.S. 29 southbound access to the I-10 eastbound on-ramp has been reduced.

▪ The U.S. 29 northbound ramp to I-10 eastbound is closed. U.S. 29 northbound drivers are being detoured to make a U-turn at Broad Street onto U.S. 29 southbound to access I-10 eastbound.

Significant progress has been made on guardrail installation work along I-10, between the Perdido River Bridge and the U.S. 29 interchange in Escambia County.

Guardrail systems are placed as a roadway safety measure to lessen the severity of a collision by absorbing kinetic energy. Construction follows strict safety and design standards.

Here’s a look at the new guardrail near the Pine Forest Road interchange (Exit 7). The posts are set at accurate depths, the panels are installed with consistent spacing, and the end treatments are fully anchored.

These safety enhancements are a part of the $19.8 million resurfacing project scheduled for completion in early 2027. This project also includes improvements at the I-10/Pine Forest Road interchange (Exit 7), installation of high-tension cable barriers, new median crossovers, and an intelligent transportation system (ITS) wrong-way detection system.
