Sunday Evening Update – Mayor Jeffrey Price, MD

Before I get into this week’s update, Peach Jam is rapidly approaching. We are working hard to make this year’s Peach Jam a family-friendly event with great entertainment and activities for all ages.

Peach Jam is a Chilton County Chamber of Commerce event, and all sponsorships for this year’s festival are being handled through the Chamber. They have already received tremendous support from local businesses and sponsors, and we are grateful for their commitment to making this event a success.

The next few weeks will be busy with pageants, auctions, concerts, and many other activities leading up to the festival.
I am also told that vendor spaces and food truck spots are already at or near capacity, which is a great sign for the event.

We know there will probably be a little rain somewhere along the way, as it seems to happen every year, but let's get ready for a lot of fun on the last Saturday in June as we roll into America 250 and the Fourth of July celebration season.

It was a fairly busy week that began Monday with meetings with staff and a City Council meeting that evening.

At the council meeting, we held a public hearing on an annexation request and approved four resolutions. These included a grant application for park walkway and sidewalk enhancements, a FEMA grant application for the Fire Department, a Homeland Security/FEMA grant application for the Fire Department, and final approval of the contract for the new Police Department site adjacent to the courthouse, as I previously noted.

Early Wednesday morning, I joined a Mayor’s Facility Tour with a couple of local mayors at Butterfly Bridge. I learned a great deal about the services they provide and gained a new appreciation for this wonderful resource that serves many families, especially in Chilton County and the City of Clanton.

Later that day, I attended the Cahaba Solid Waste Disposal Authority meeting at Hoover City Hall. The authority includes Hoover, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Pelham, Trussville, Vestavia Hills, Fultondale, and Clanton. It was a lengthy meeting, but I learned a great deal, met several city leaders, and gained a better understanding of the issues involved in waste management.

Wednesday evening, Central Alabama Electric Cooperative hosted a training session on Robert’s Rules of Order and the proper conduct of city council, board, and committee meetings. Representatives from across the region attended, and the discussion covered several unique situations that local governments may encounter. It was a valuable learning opportunity.

I also met this week with a local business owner whose company has relocated to another site within the city limits. I appreciated him coming to discuss future plans for the property before making any decisions so that we can work together and help ensure the best outcome.

On Saturday morning, I attended the Cornerstone Peach Run awards ceremony. It was a great event with a strong turnout, lots of participants, and many visitors from outside our area. I was honored to welcome them and thank them for spending part of their weekend in Clanton.

Around lunchtime, I attended the car show in West End, which drew participants and visitors from throughout the region. It was another excellent opportunity to welcome guests to our city and showcase what Clanton has to offer.

Saturday evening, I spent time downtown at the Chilton County Cruisers car show. It was great to see old friends, meet new people, and enjoy the atmosphere around Corner Park. Despite a few concerns about the weather, the event was well attended and provided another chance to thank our many out-of-town visitors for coming to Clanton.

I was given a great drone view of the new walking path lights from the tennis courts to goose pond. Seeing it from above really puts into perspective how much this project improves safety, accessibility, and quality of life for our residents.

I’m excited to share that the City Council has approved the contract for the purchase of the property that will become the future home of the Clanton Police Department, adjacent to the new Chilton County Courthouse.

This has been a lengthy process, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped bring it to a successful conclusion. With this transaction moving forward, we can now focus on planning, design, and ultimately breaking ground on this important project.

I’m also looking forward to continuing our work with KPS Group, the architect for both the new Police Department and future Senior Community Center. Their experience and expertise, combined with the valuable local insight of a team member who lives right here in Clanton, will be a tremendous asset as we work to create facilities our community can be proud of.

Having the Police Department located next to the courthouse will create a strong public safety and government services hub that will serve our community for many years to come.

Sunday Update – Mayor Jeffrey Price, MD

Another good week for the City of Clanton.

Early in the week, I spent time meeting with several departments regarding business licenses and sales tax collections. Businesses pay sales tax to the state, and then the state returns the city's portion to us. We reviewed those processes and discussed new software that could be more efficient and save us money.

We also began planning for the 2026-2027 city budget. While it is still early, we discussed priorities and major projects for the coming year, including a new police department, a new senior center, future plans for the courthouse site, and additional economic development opportunities. We encouraged department heads to begin preparing their budget requests early so we can prioritize projects, make wise use of both budgeted funds and bond proceeds, and be thoughtful and strategic in our planning.

One of the highlights of my week was visiting with residents in their homes. I had the opportunity to meet with a couple who live in one of our subdivisions to discuss their homeowners association, which has become inactive over the years. They care deeply about their neighborhood and wanted to discuss ways to keep it attractive and address issues such as property maintenance and an abandoned property near the entrance to the subdivision. It was a productive conversation, and I hope we can work together to continue improving their neighborhood.

I also visited another couple who invited me to their home simply to share some positive thoughts about the city and discuss a book written by their son. They were kind enough to give me a signed copy.

It was another enjoyable visit and a reminder of how much I enjoy getting out into the community. Visiting with residents in their homes gives me a better understanding of how people feel about our city than sitting behind a desk all day.

I also met with staff to discuss zoning regulations and ordinances related to home-based businesses. There are specific rules that apply to operating businesses from residential property, so I strongly encourage anyone considering opening a business from their home to speak with me or the Planning Department before making investments or changes to their property. These regulations are designed to protect neighborhoods and ensure compatibility within our community.

Later in the week, I met with a resident who recently purchased a building in town and wanted to discuss possible uses for the property. We talked about zoning, development opportunities, and ways the project could benefit both the property owner and the city. I cannot stress enough the importance of speaking with city officials early in the planning process. Even if your plans are still developing, we can often help point you in the right direction and potentially save you time, money, and frustration.

I also had the opportunity to visit with the new CCHS head football coach. We had not spoken much in person since he was hired, and it was good to catch up. Our conversation focused on football, community support, and building a program that continues to make Clanton proud. I believe he is going to do a great job.

We also discussed the proposed contract with Chilton County regarding the police department site. The agreement now contains approximately 98% of the language recommended by our attorney. Overall, I feel good about the contract and believe it is time to bring this process to a close after months of discussion dating back to late January. Hopefully, the agreement will be approved at tomorrow night's council meeting.

As many of you have noticed, most courthouse employees have now moved to the new courthouse. I believe the 9-1-1 operations center will remain for a few more weeks, but parking around the old courthouse is now much more available. My understanding is that once county operations are fully relocated and remaining property matters are completed, ownership of the old courthouse site will transfer to the City so we can begin planning for its demolition.

Sunday Evening Update – Mayor Jeffrey Price, MD

Quick note: Speedway is moving a significant amount of dirt and clearing trees across from Love’s Truck Stop. I spoke with two Speedway executives on Friday to make sure they replace landscape buffers and trees where possible to help minimize noise for the adjacent subdivision. They are excited to be in Clanton and assured me they want to be as good a neighbor as possible.

Monday started out well since it was a holiday, and I was fortunate to attend the Chilton County Memorial Day ceremony and wreath laying at the new courthouse. It was a well-attended and very special event that meant a great deal to families who have lost loved ones in service to our country.

Tuesday morning, I met with a local representative of the Girl Scouts. We had a great discussion about what they do and where they currently meet, which is at the Senior Center off Enterprise Road. We also discussed additional possibilities for meeting space. I even got to sample a Girl Scout cookie for the first time in years. It was excellent, and the sale of those cookies help support many of their projects and learning adventures.

I also met with a representative from the Historical Society who shared the history of the city cemetery. He explained that the cemetery existed even before Clanton officially became a city and discussed how the city eventually came to possess and maintain it. He also shared information about projects they are working on to repair markers and document the cemetery online with the State of Alabama.

We also held a special-called Utility Board meeting regarding a funding opportunity for water meter installations and other needed upgrades. In addition, we held a special-called City Council meeting to formalize an agreement with the Chamber of Commerce to use the park for Peach Jam and allow certain vendors to sell their products during the event.

On Wednesday, I met with a resident to discuss his property and the current zoning, along with what types of homes could be built there. I continue to encourage anyone buying, selling, or planning construction inside the city limits to speak with the Planning Commission or with me before purchasing property or beginning work. We want the best possible outcome for property owners and developers and hope to prevent situations where work has to be corrected later.

On Thursday, as I posted on my page, Councilman Agee and I attended the Head Start graduation ceremony. It was a really special day for the graduates and their families.

I was also invited to attend a CCHS Gridiron Club meeting to hear from the new head coach about plans for the upcoming season. The upgrades to the football facilities are super nice and will likely be completed just in time for the season.

On Friday, I attended the library summer kickoff event held on the Adair property. There were so many activities for families to enjoy, and it was great seeing such a large crowd. Library staff shared with me that throughout the summer they often serve around 100 kids and adults per day, and this kickoff event continues to grow every year.

I also attended a Peach Jam meeting as final details are being finalized for what should be a very family-friendly event with a great hometown atmosphere and excellent entertainment on both Friday and Saturday night.

Friday afternoon, I received the contract from the County Commission for the land purchase adjacent to the courthouse where we plan to build the new police department. We will be reviewing the contract offer this week and hopefully can move toward finalizing everything soon.

This morning, Councilman Agee and I had the honor of attending the Head Start graduation ceremony at EM Henry Park in West End.

Since taking office, we have worked to make improvements to their building, including needed repairs and expanding their space to increase capacity for future growth.

It was a wonderful celebration filled with proud parents and excited children. It was especially encouraging to see so many families investing in giving their children that important head start in school and in life.

Congratulations to all of these young graduates as they begin their educational journey. Their future is bright.
