Why you should attend the Fantastical Book Fair in the style of The Correspondent by Virginia Evans:
Dear Margaret,
I am writing to you with some urgency, as I would hate for you to miss what promises to be a genuinely worthwhile outing. I have it on good authority, and I do not pass along information I cannot verify, that Sparrow Books is hosting something called the Fantastical Book Fair. Every genre represented, I am told. Not merely the ones deemed respectable by people who stopped reading adventurously sometime around 1987.
There will be a game, which I mention only because you have complained no fewer than three times this month about having nothing to do on a Thursday. There are raffle baskets. There will be food and mocktails, which I understand to be perfectly civilized beverages requiring no apology.
Most importantly, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Clarion Free Library. I trust I need not explain to you why that matters. If I do, we have larger problems than your social calendar.
I have already marked the date. I suggest you do the same.
Yours, with the usual affection and mild impatience,
S
P.S. Bring comfortable shoes. And do not arrive late and then pretend you were there from the beginning. I always notice.
