Bikers Who Care awarded grant for new Bel-Aire All Wheels Skatepark under Clarksville Parks & Recreation
CLARKSVILLE, TN – The local non-profit community service organization, Bikers Who Care (BWC), applied for, and has been awarded a grant for $1,445,000 from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation, to fund development of a regional All-Wheels Skatepark for Clarksville.
The new Skatepark will be developed and managed by the Clarksville Parks & Recreation Department, at the site of the former Bel-Aire swimming pool.
Why a skate park?
The former pool was built in the 1960s, and closed in 2022 due to structural issues and a geological void found underneath it. Parks & Recreation subsequently held a series of public meetings to determine the best use of the park space, and by vote, it was decided that a regional Skatepark was the public’s desired asset.
Parks & Recreation worked in conjunction with New Line Skate Parks to facilitate a second series of public meetings for potential users of an All-Wheels Park, to help guide the designers in what amenities should be included.
Final design and construction documents have been drafted, and the project has been “shovel-ready” awaiting funding. Construction is expected to take about one year.
The project will include amenities for people of all ages, including a paved, accessible walking trail, picnic pavilions, a basketball court and a playground.
Locking arms for a common goal
Billy Hughes, Vice President of Bikers Who Care, expressed his enthusiasm on behalf of the BWC. “We are honored to secure this funding to bring this park to life. We look forward to working alongside Clarksville Parks and Recreation to demonstrate what can be accomplished when local leadership and dedicated non-profits lock arms for a common goal”.
Hughes went on to say “The BWC has always stood behind the kids in our community. Major achievements like this park project reinforce our resolve to ensure we continue expanding our mission and delivering lasting, positive impacts for the next generation.”
Lastly, he offers a reminder as you’re traveling throughout our City. “When you see someone riding down the road wearing a BWC shirt or patch, you can rest assured that behind that vest is a heart larger than life when it comes to making a difference for the kids in our community”.
“When we were presented with the opportunity to work with the BWC, as well as revitalize a well-loved park area, we knew it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. Thank you to the Community Health Foundation for providing this grant funding and cultivating such crucial partnerships in our community”, said Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Letourneau.
Echoing what Ms. Letourneau said, Mayor Joe Pitts shared his delight in seeing such a unique project come to life in our community. “Through the excellent community outreach efforts of our Parks and Recreation Department, we know that there is a need for this inviting all-skate feature.
Bikers Who Care have been an important and impactful organization in our city for decades. Their emphasis on projects and programs influencing our youth has made a difference in the lives of thousands over the years.”
Pitts said that, while you may not find him in a helmet and pads anytime soon, he is excited to “drop in” and see others have fun.
