We are off to great start. In Language Arts we have been using the new curriculum called CKLA. The stories are enjoyable and in addition to teaching reading and writing, they have some great themes for the kids to learn about and make connections with.

I math we've reviewed place value. The other day I mentioned to the kids that the best way to improve math and make it enjoyable (if they struggle with math) is to learn the multiplication facts to the point of instant recognition.

In science we have been learning what scientists do and how the scientific method can allow anyone to learn with or without a teacher.

I social studies we are learning the states and capitals so that the students will know the locations as we start talking about historical events.

This is a great group of kids, thanks for your hard work with all of them.

We had a great first day today. There was a lot of excitement and the kids were so happy to see each other after the summer. I can tell that this grade-level group is close-knit and has some great long-term friendships.

Thanks for the donations and for being such great parents to a group of wonderful kiddos. Tomorrow we will talk more about routines, rules, and expectations.

This summer I spent time with my family. We didn’t go on any big trips but we did go camping. We went to Lava Hot Springs. My boys and I went to the air show. I also took my daughter to see Hamilton. What are some fun things you did this summer?

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick reminder that we are going on our field trip tomorrow to see a documentary called Galapagos and to spend some time at the Museum at Hill AFB. We will be eating lunch a little later than usual, so please do your best to make sure your student gets a good breakfast (they will get some popcorn at the movie). Also, there is a good chance we might be outside for a few minutes tomorrow (either waiting to get in the theater or walking around the outdoor displays at the museum). Please make sure your student is prepared to be outside for up to 30 minutes or so.

Also, the school is doing a fundraiser for an online coupon book called Wasatch Savings. I gave the students the option to take an information packet. If your student didn't bring one and you'd like one, let me know. If your student took one and you'd rather not participate, I completely understand, and they can bring it back tomorrow.

Pictures of today's math homework will be in the comments

I meant to send this out yesterday, but I never hit post. Anyway,

1.) On Friday we will be making some simple Valentine’s boxes to use next Wednesday (picture in the comments). If your student could bring a cereal box or two (or something similar) that would be great. On Wednesday next week, we’ll have a small party for probably 30 minutes or so. I won’t need much help, but If you would like to drop by we’ll begin after the last recess at 2:30. As a reminder we have 28 kids in the class, 15 girls and 13 boys.

2.) Our field trip is next Tuesday. We will be coming back to the school for lunch, but we’ll be eating about an hour later than we usually do. Please make sure your student has a good breakfast and is ready for the extra time between meals.

3.) We have started a new unit on multiplying and dividing with fractions. It’s a little late, but I’ll attach pictures of yesterday’s assignment.

I'm including pictures of today's math assignment with answers in the comments. Most kids finished in class. Also, I've had a few people ask about class numbers for Valentine's Day. We have a total of 27 kids. There are 14 girls and 13 boys.

Hi everyone. The students brough their laptops home today just in case we end up being remote tomorrow because of bad weather.

Also, we have started adding and subtracting fractions. This is one of the most complicated things we will learn in math this year. Once the kids get it, it's easy, but it takes a while for many to figure out what is going on. I'm including a picture of the assignment with answers in the comments section.

Grades are live and a paper report card went home. The chapter 4 test in math went great for a lot of kids. Three kids (Gauge, Camden and Allie) got 100% and quite a few were only a few points back. Don't forget maturation on Friday.

Call it a New Year's resolution, but I've been wanting to improve my communication for parents and families, and I figured that this might be the best way. I plan to post a couple of times a week and help you all to know what assignments to watch for.

A few things to be aware of, we are wrapping up Chapter 4 in math which introduces the kids to many concepts of algebra. Their assignment today is a chapter 4 review. Most of them finished in class. I'll put pictures of the assignment in the comments. Gauge deserves a special shout out today. He, along with many others, has worked hard to understand these concepts. We are also writing a research essay about snow. I'm trying to help the kids see how much easier it is to write when you take a few minutes to prepare your ideas and organize your thoughts.

Also, the back of the school stays shaded and takes a very long time for the snow and ice to melt in the area where we line up and it can get slippery. Please do your best to make sure their shoes are ready for the ice and that they have a good coat for the cold.
