Today we are proud to recognize Sgt. Carmen Bermudez, who is a 20 year veteran of the Clifton Police Department and currently assigned as a patrol supervisor. She was a previous Officer of the Year award winner, the first female winner in Clifton history, the first female detective in department history, and only the second female to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Prior to her promotion, Sgt. Bermudez served as a detective in both the Juvenile Division and the Body Worn Camera Unit. The first law enforcement officer in her family, she has since been joined in uniform by her sister (Belleville PD) and her daughter (Port Authority PD), as well as several other family members. Sgt. Bermudez knew from a young age that she wanted to be a police officer, and she recalls being the victim of a robbery at twelve years old, which further solidified her commitment to pursue a law enforcement career. Her favorite part of her job is having many opportunities to help others, and among her most rewarding memories are the many instances where she was able to comfort and pursue justice for victims of s*x crimes.

The Clifton Police Department family mourns the loss of one of our own, Officer Joseph A. Pichnarcik #6022, following a valiant battle with a long-term illness. Officer Pichnarcik served with the Clifton Police Department since 2006. Before being hired by the Clifton Police Department, Officer Pichnarcik served with the Paterson Police Department. Known for his infectious smile and sense of humor, he also earned a reputation for being a cop's cop, meaning he was always ready to help his fellow officers in a time of need or complete a difficult task when called upon. He was loved by all who knew him, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Pichnarcik family during this difficult time. Rest peacefully, Joe. We have the watch from here.

Very sorry hero of our highways

We regret to announce the passing of Trooper I Robert S. Anlas, #2638 (Ret) on September 16, 2024.
Below is his published obituary for your information.

Robert Stephen Anlas, 76 of Independence Twp. NJ passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024 in Hackettstown Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Irvington, NJ on October 10, 1947, “Steve” was the son of the late Andrew and Gertrude Mott Anlas.

Steve was truly one of a kind with multiple talents that he expressed in his quiet, unassuming way. His artistic pursuits included photography, stained glass windows, sculptures and more recently, tie-dyed tee shirts and fabrics. Steve could always be found on local lakes and rivers to see if he could land a couple fish. While working in his studio, he would always be found listening to the Beatles, Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia especially. When his boys were young he greatly enjoyed coaching little league football and supporting the Independence Chiefs.

Steve proudly served his country in the United States Navy after graduating High School. After fulfilling his military term Steve joined the New Jersey State Police where he served for 20 years. After his retirement he worked for Hosking Livery of Hackettstown, NJ as a driver for many years. With his humor, wit and driving skills it was no surprise that “only Steve” would be requested drive his clients to their destinations.

He is survived by one son, Matthew Anlas. His ex-wife, Michelle Burd Wilson. Brothers Bill Anlas and his wife, Sue. Rick Anlas and Chuck Anlas. Sisters Carol Fischer and Barbara Land. He is also survived by ten nieces and nephews. Steve is predeceased by his beloved son, Stephen Anlas and one brother, James Anlas.

Per Steve’s request there will be no public funeral services. A private interment will take place at the Hackettstown Union Cemetery. The Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ has been entrusted with Steve’s services. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.cochranfuneral.com.
