Worth a read.

MCPS Community:

A few weeks ago, I emailed our community about some important challenges facing our schools. Today, I want to build on that conversation with a message of reassurance and gratitude.

We have navigated a variety of challenges in recent weeks - the least of which has been cold temperatures, abundant snow and poor road conditions. Thank you for your flexibility and collaborative effort with the weather. Spring is around the corner!

In addition to a dramatic winter, our nation has seen a steady flow of executive orders at the federal level - some related to education and others that have broad impacts on our state and our local community. There is real fear and angst being generated with real and potential job losses, threats of millions of dollars of funding cuts to our schools and universities, cutting entire government agencies, and upending years of work and collaboration for grants and other funding sources that help support our infrastructure. To add to the chaos, State level developments are unfolding daily in the legislature. It is a lot to keep up with and will certainly continue to evolve. Please know that we follow all developments closely and are in continual, collaborative communication with our partner districts and leaders across the state as we thoughtfully consider how to best support our school communities through any possible policy changes. Some developments, like the STARS Act supporting funding for new teacher pay, bring positive change. Others create uncertainty and concern among our district families, staff and community.

I won’t get too far into the political weeds on all the recent executive orders in this email but in broad terms, they relate to some critically important issues: funding, immigrant students, equity, inclusion and diversity practices, school safety and the overall structure of education at the federal level. Given the significant and consequential nature of these topics I feel some reassurance is warranted.

At the core of everything we do at MCPS lies this essential commitment: we strive to ensure that every one of our students feels safe, valued, genuinely cared for and supported. The Board of Trustees stands firmly aligned with this vision and is equally committed to maintaining our educational values during these uncertain times. This commitment will not waiver and transcends policy changes. I feel tremendously grateful and comforted that MCPS staff is such an incredible group of dedicated and caring professionals who truly care about our students. Thank you to all our staff for the very important work they do every day amidst a variety of challenges that arise.

Additionally, one of our greatest strengths lies in how we come together as a broader community. MCPS places the highest value on an ongoing collaborative effort that is based on mutual respect, compassion for others and a shared sense of genuine care and responsibility in support of our students. Every day, I witness countless examples of this. These moments - whether its students supporting a classmate who's struggling, families reaching across cultural boundaries to help each other, or teachers going the extra mile - remind me that our school community's heart and values run deep. Thank you for leading by example and cultivating these essential values. When we expect and inspire compassion and kindness from our students, we create a thriving school community.

I am deeply grateful for your continued partnership in making our schools welcoming spaces where all students can learn and grow. Thank you for your ongoing support of MCPS students!

Last night's school board meeting had a lot of information and not many actions on our part.
One exciting thing was the decision to add girls flag football to fall activities for the high schools. Honestly, I wanted to ask why not tackle football, but there's a grant for flag football and apparently that's what girls play. Just excited they can play football. Hopefully this grows.

We mostly learned about school safety measures. I am impressed with how many resources in our district go to this effort. This Spring you may have a chance to support safety funding. We are currently spending general funding budget on safety. Funding safety will free up money for teachers and supports for everyone.

Wow! What a full school board meeting tonight. Here are the highlights in brief:

1) We heard from the high-school Trustees from Big Sky, Hellgate and Willard. The kids are alright, y'all. Absolutely worth it. I, personally, would love to have them start sticking around for the meetings, even if they can't vote. I'd love their input during discussion.

2) We voted on the school calendar. The teacher and staff unions have been negotiating for several years with the board to move Spring Break back to where it used to be - between 3rd and 4th quarter and halfway through the semester. When UM changed their schedule to cut wintersession, the district moved spring break to continue to align with UM. Parents who responded to the survey were slightly more in favor of keeping the current schedule, with teachers responding more skewed toward April. At the end of the day, we moved Spring Break to align with our quarters and provide a break spread out from other early Spring semester holidays in 2026. I voted for this change because I felt it was important to negotiate fairly with the teachers. If it doesn't work, the new board can always move it back.

3) We voted to call for an election for school board trustees and potential levys this spring. If we don't call for an election, terms expire and there is no school board and no possibility of levys. The state anticipates 20% of our local funding coming from levys, and most levys aren't new taxes - they are the same as how we all pay certain taxes now and are capped. I asked about funding mechanisms and if we needed a placeholder levy for potential disappearing funds through DOGE action. There is not a levy in this cycle that makes sense legally to help, but there are other ones down the road if it comes to it.

4) We heard about state senate bills 204 and 205 and how terrible they would be for school funding.

5) We negotiated a contract with Superintendent Hill for the next 3 years.

Big things to understand after our board retreat today, but I wanted to make sure to share one highlight for me.

Legally, MCPS can follow supreme court and 9th circuit precedent, so even if bathroom bills pass or even if Title 9 goes away or even if the President or federal government tells us to check student residency/immigration status etc, we can continue to support serving all students equitably and fairly in our schools and focus on education and supporting student needs. A huge sigh of relief from me - and though my colleagues and I don't agree on everything - and we shouldn't- we were all glad to hear this today. Your kiddos' safety and education are, and will be, protected.
