🍎 EVERY DAY COUNTS!
Daily school attendance is crucial for children to succeed in school and in life. An absence may be needed when ill, but parents are urged not to plan vacations, schedule non-urgent appointments, or let students stay home during school hours. Here are 10 reasons why kids need to be in school:

1. ACADEMIC SUCCESS: Studies show missing class just 1-2 days per month can negatively impact a child’s academic performance.
2. READING SKILLS: Research shows kids with daily attendance have higher literacy skills by fourth grade than those who are absent more often.
3. CONFIDENCE BUILDER: Children thrive on routine, and consistent school attendance provides structure and purpose.
4. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT: Students learn how to interact with adults like teachers, librarians and coaches; engage with their peers in the classroom; and socialize with friends when they're at school.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT: Studies show being late to school can lead to students developing poor attendance habits and negative attitudes.
6. GRADUATION CELEBRATION: Research shows that poor attendance in elementary school is a leading indicator that a student may later drop out of high school. However, by freshman year, regular daily attendance patterns become a leading indicator that a student will graduate.
7. BEHAVIOR AND WELLNESS: From free meals served to all students, to mental health and wellness programs, each campus promotes a nurturing, safe environment.
8. BEING PREPARED: Research shows students who attend school regularly keep up with assignments and develop better ways to prepare for a quiz or exam.
9. PARTICIPATION AND CRITICAL THINKING: Consistent attendance allows students to follow the curriculum, feel confident they haven’t missed a key concept and be more likely to participate in class.
10. HABITS FOR LIFE: Create positive habits now for children to enjoy and use throughout their entire school career.

🍎 STATE OF THE DISTRICT

Superintendent Corrine Folmer, Ed.D., will speak about district updates and share the wins from last school year with community supporters.

Five Clovis Unified high schools ranked in the Top 10 high schools in the Fresno area, according to US News! Schools are ranked based on college readiness, state assessments, graduation rate and more. Clovis North and Clovis West high schools came in second and third places, respectively; Buchanan High came in fifth, Clovis East High in sixth and Clovis High in eighth.

University High School topped the US News & World Report’s annual list of best high schools in Fresno County, followed by Clovis North High School and Clovis West.

✏️ FIRST DAY FUN!
From icebreaker activities and "No Backpack Days" to running rallies up and down the hallways of the school and all-school photos, so many campuses spent the first week of school building relationships and boosting school spirit!

The Terry P. Bradley Educational Center was recently featured by ABC30, taking a look at the new facilities on campus that opened this school year or are opening soon! From an Industrial Arts building for the new Aviation and Aerospace Science career pathway, to upcoming performing arts spaces, to the sunken football field that is slated to host the first home game of the season, there is a lot happening at TBEC!

Students returning to the Terry Bradley Education Center this week will find more than just new classes and teachers.

⭐ UNITY & BELONGING
In an ongoing celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary, this month we focus on “Unity & Belonging” as qualities that our country was founded upon. In August, we return to our classrooms where we can get to know each other and build connections. Much like the unification of many colonies into a single nation, on campus we seek to build unity, a shared vision and a place where everyone belongs.

Clovis Unified schools and departments are keeping America’s semiquincentennial festivities going all year long with monthly themes that complete the statement: America was founded on ____. The construction project to modernize Nelson Elementary is underway, and ABC30 recently featured its progress! Classrooms were worked on over the summer, with new cabinets and bookshelves added and gas and electrical systems updated. The new administration office is set to open in the spring, and final stages of the project are scheduled for completion by next school year.

One of Clovis Unified School District's oldest campuses, Nelson Elementary School, is undergoing a major transformation.

❤️ CARING COMMUNITY
Students at Fancher Creek and Weldon elementary schools all have brand new backpacks thanks to a generous donation by the Clovis Elks Lodge! On the first day of school, each student was invited to choose a backpack filled with school supplies to use for the new school year. It was a fun way to kick off the new school year! Thanks to the Clovis Elks for caring about our students!
