The History of the Wagontown Swim Club
In the autumn of 1959 a volunteer committee from the Wagontown Fire Company made plans to establish the Wagontown Swim Club, with a swimming pool and other family-oriented activities available on the hill behind the firehouse. Owned and operated by the Wagontown Fire Company, the profits realized would help to update not only equipment, but firefighting skills.
Opening in the spring of 1960, 100 families became members to enjoy the underwater lighting, a high dive, and a bathhouse. A pool director ran the operations. Teen lifeguards guaranteed the safety of the bathers and a swim coach organized a swim team. The swim team that developed in 1960 eventually merged with the Brandywine swim league.
During the 25th anniversary in 1985 games filled the day of celebration, highlighted by a helicopter landing in the pool and dropping bags of money for the children. Fireworks lit up the night.
Presently Shirley Pfitzenmeyer, a sixteen year veteran, manages the facility with a co-manager, eight lifeguards, three concession workers and a swim coach. Mrs. Pfitzenmeyer states that “safety is our motto,” and not once has a liability occurred in the pool. Lifeguards must be certified not only in lifesaving but CPR and first aid.
The 315 family members now enjoy a sand volleyball court, basketball court and pool games such as the greased watermelon. The lovely setting is enhanced by a concession stand with a table deck overlooking the pool and grounds. Served by the fire company in its provision for a community’s recreation, the people in-turn serve their fire company who work to keep their lives safe.
