Today, our country takes a moment to honor and remember all those who have served and continue to serve our great nation. Along with many of you, I have a special understanding of the sacrifice that our duty requires because I have walked that path myself. The bravery, selflessness, professionalism and dedication our Veterans display in defending our freedoms are the foundation of our country’s strength. I have special gratitude for all of you who have chosen to serve your communities, state and nation through the Vermont National Guard, including those who may no longer be in our ranks but are forever part of this family.

We should all honor the families of those who serve, as well. The strength and support they provide and their sacrifices should not go unnoticed. Through missed birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and many family events, they keep life at home moving forward and provide comfort during difficult times. Their resilience and endurance are invaluable, and they deserve our thanks.

Gratitude is a strong theme this time of year. Whether that thanks is for time with our loved ones, successes in our work life, or a successful excursion into the woods for all our hunters out there; it is good practice to recognize the parts of our lives that bring us joy. As we enter this season of gratitude, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to each of you for your unwavering commitment. Your service, both past and present, is a testament to your steadfast dedication to our citizens and each other. The sacrifices you and your families make daily - the time away from loved ones, the physical and mental challenges you endure, and the willingness to face danger on behalf of others - do not go unnoticed and should be recognized.

The Vermont National Guard has answered the call time and again to support missions around the globe and domestic response in our state and nation. Our veterans pass that torch to the next generation; to tackle the missions of tomorrow with that same shared commitment to duty, honor, and country.

For all those who have carried that torch, that duty, that sacrifice: Thank you.

I was able to view some of the damage in parts of Vermont today, including Montpelier. Please be safe out there. Water covers many of our routes and side roads. Check https://newengland511.org/region/Vermont for information on what roads are clear. Check in on your neighbors. Remember - we’re all in this together!

Congratulations to our recent graduates of the Equal Opportunity Leaders Course!

If you are not aware, the Equal Opportunity Leader Course is a six-day course that focuses the student on military equal opportunity and diversity management. It prepares graduates to perform the duties of an Equal Opportunity Leader at both the battalion and company level.

Graduates of the course possess the skills required to advise commanders on the process of equal opportunity complaints, aid in developing a positive command climate, trained to conduct unit level equal opportunity training, assist in the preparation of special ethnic observances, and serve as the primary resource manager of equal opportunity matters within the unit.

I had the opportunity to speak with the class, and sincerely appreciate their willingness to step up into the important role of Equal Opportunity Leader. I certainly appreciated their candor during our discussion. Their work matters.

Today, we recognize 386 years of Guard members serving their communities, states and our nation.

Our National Guard heritage dates back to the 13 original colonies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony Militia was established December 13, 1636, marking the beginning the first official organized militia in the United States, to where we trace our roots. We are the oldest component of the United States armed forces and one of the oldest active military organizations in the world.

Today, we celebrate our Citizen Soldiers and Airmen in all 50 states, three territories and District of Columbia, who serve proudly and distinctively in every major conflict our nation has faced. These brave men and women embody the values and ideals on which our country was founded.

National Guard members have answered every request for support overseas and responded to every Governor’s call for help here at home, despite a pandemic, record wildfires and hurricanes – very often, these are additional missions you perform to support our sister states and our active duty counterparts.

The role of the National Guard has evolved significantly from the militias formed prior to the American Revolution, to the National Guard of today, which is now a proven operational force. We will continue our good work, ensuring we remain relevant and reliable as the primary combat reserve of the Army and the Air Force. You are a part of something remarkable, thanks for being a part of it.

Put the Vermonters Ahead!
