in 1872 Victoria Woodhull was formally nominated as the first female candidate for United States President. She ran on the Equal Rights Party's ticket nearly a half a century before women had the right to vote. Woodhull was also the first woman to testify before Congress. In 1871, she argued that the 14th and 15th Amendments to the US Constitution should have also given women the right to vote. (Photo Credit: Harvard Art Museum/Fogg Museum)

Hey UMD Platform! It's Equal Pay Day- which marks how far into 2016 women have to work to earn what men made in 2015- for women on average. Equal Pay Days for women of color, women with disabilities, mothers and LGBTQ+ women are still months away. Learn about what policies exist in our state regarding equal pay and what's lacking so we can work together on our lobbying agenda.

Welcome to the Women Build, Protect, and Move America portal. Use this site to find information and resources about getting women into higher-paying careers in transportation, construction and protective services.

to civil rights activist Rosa Parks, born in 1913. It was in 1955 that she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. At the time, Parks was an active member of Montgomery’s NAACP. She was arrested and convicted for her actions. This refusal coincided with the start of a boycott of the Montgomery bus system by African Americans. At the time African Americans accounted for 75 percent of riders. The Women’s Political Council, an organization of black women active in anti-segregation activities and politics, provided the hands, feet, and voice of the Montgomery bus boycott. Parks was found guilty of breaking a city law and fined $14. Her lawyer challenged the ruling. While Parks’ case was in the state appeals court another case, Browder v. Gayle, was decided. In that case, the U.S. District Court ruled that public bus segregation based on race was unconstitutional. This ruling was upheld on November 13, 1956 by the U.S. Supreme Court.
