What might it have been like to arrive in Columbia, California by stagecoach during the gold rush? This ride through town on the Quartz Mountain Stage Line might be the closest thing to a time-machine whisking you past many of the original buildings that sprung up shortly after gold was discovered here in 1850.

Columbia is one of the best preserved gold rush towns in California having the largest collection of original structures. After the gold ran out, the town continued to serve residents who settled here and it never became a ghost-town. Hollywood discovered Columbia in the early 1900's and several movies and television series featured scenes that were filmed throughout the town including High Noon, Rage at Dawn, Little House on the Prairie, Pale Rider, Blood Red, The Young Riders, and many more.

Columbia became a state historic park in 1945. Today, it features a museum, hotels, merchants, saloons, restaurants, a working blacksmith shop, candle dipping, gold panning, and a stagecoach pulled by a team of four horses. Docents and merchants are dressed in period clothing making it feel as if you've stepped back in time while exploring the town. It's a fascinating place to visit and there are several exhibits throughout the park that tells the story of Columbia's rich history.

Columbia State Historic Park

In 1928, the state park commission hired Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to survey lands for the California park system. Olmsted Jr. recommended Columbia as one of the best preserved gold mining towns in the state.

There was a statewide movement for preservation during this time. Olmsted's recommendation inspired locals and preservation groups to work together to preserve Columbia's historic brick buildings.

On July 6,1933, Columbia was officially listed as California State Landmark 123.
