SC Children's Book Challenge Give your students a fun, creative activity that meets multiple state standards. Winners receive cash prizes and will be published.

Fourth and fifth-grade students in South Carolina are invited to write and illustrate a children’s book about energy. The Children’s Book Challenge is a creative competition for all 4th and 5th-grade students in South Carolina. Individually or in groups, on paper or digitally, they can write and illustrate early-reader books about energy. t’s a great way for educators to engage their students with

a cross-curricular project focused on energy education that also correlates to many South Carolina state standards.

Stella Grace Burroughs, a fourth-grade student at Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science, has won the South Carolina Children’s Book Challenge, individual division. Stella Grace created "The Day That Power Took a Vacation," which was chosen among nearly 200 statewide submissions. Stella Grace was guided in her project by the school’s visual arts teacher, Kimberlea Daly.

From across South Carolina, 75 educators, on behalf of over 1,200 fourth and fifth-graders, have registered for the 2025-26 South Carolina Children's Book Challenge.
This year, those students will be creating books about "A Day in the Life of a Lineworker." One of the many resources provided to them is this informative and engaging video.
