On May 8th, officers from around the state participated in the final leg of the South Carolina Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. The flame of hope was carried 10 miles from Broad River Road to Fort Jackson in Columbia, to light the cauldron and officially open the Summer Games. The flame of hope symbolizes courage, diversity inclusion, and the celebration of the athletes competing.

SCDNR was represented by 1st Sgt Earl Pope, LCpl Elise Still, LCpl Rhett Bissell and PFC William Joyner.

Today, May 15, is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day, celebrated during National Police Week as a time to honor and remember those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Since the start of our agency, 12 officers and one K9 have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting South Carolina’s natural resources.

We will never forget the sacrifices they made and we hope this list never grows longer.

Each year, National Police Week is observed to honor the courage, sacrifice and dedication of law enforcement officers. It is a time of solemn remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and a celebration of those who serve with integrity and bravery every day.

As conservation officers, our wardens face the unique challenge of policing off the beaten path, working cases in the woods, on the water, and anywhere the job takes them. They are on duty 24/7/365 including during extreme weather conditions and natural disasters, often leaving their own families in service to the people and natural resources of our state.

Join us in thanking these brave officers this week and every day of the year.

This week, May 3-9, is recognized as Public Servant Recognition Week. We're proud to recognize all of our officers and administrative staff for the work they do serving the people of South Carolina.

Our officers cover all 46 counties of the state, protecting South Carolina's natural resources and ensuring every South Carolinian has equal opportunity to enjoy hunting, fishing and recreational opportunities.

Their schedules often push beyond a typical 9-5 with officers working around the clock, through nights, weekends and holidays, sacrificing time with their own families for the people of our state.

A big thank you to all of our officers and behind-the-scenes staff for their service to South Carolina.

The “MADDY” awards seek to recognize law enforcement and community members who work to eliminate drug and alcohol impaired driving/operating from our roads and waterways.

PFC Parker Calvert was selected as the winner of the 2026 Outstanding Dedication to BUI Enforcement MADDY. Also nominated for this award were PFC Patrick Mills, Officer William Moss, Officer Cameron Smith and Officer Joshua Turner.

Other SCDNR nominees include: PFC Harmon Davenport and PFC Sydney Grant, who were nominated for the “Rick Moore DRE of the Year” MADDY. Mrs. Shari Driggers was nominated as the “Barry Barnette Prosecutor of the Year”.
