🚫 YARD WASTE SITE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE 🚫

The yard waste site is a privilege for residents who live within the Columbus Junction city limits. It is intended for items such as tree branches, leaves, grass clippings, and other yard waste.

Unfortunately, we continue to find items that are not permitted, including building materials, tires, vehicle windshields, toilets, furniture, household trash, and debris from commercial tree-cutting operations. Commercial contractors are NOT allowed to dump at this site.

This morning around 8:00 a.m., someone decided to light a portion of the yard waste pile on fire while the wind was blowing toward town. This follows a similar incident on May 27 at approximately 2:00 a.m. that resulted in the fire department being called out and volunteers being awakened in the middle of the night to respond to a preventable situation.

The City has strict guidelines regarding when the pile can and cannot be burned, especially during dry conditions and when winds are blowing toward residential areas. While we understand the pile can occasionally become crowded before it is pushed up, that issue is often made worse when unauthorized commercial loads are dumped at the site.

Effective immediately, the yard waste site will be closed until further notice while we clean up the area and reevaluate how the site will operate moving forward.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but repeated misuse of the site and unsafe actions have left us with no other choice.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

⚠️Water Leak Update⚠️

The line on 5th St has been repaired and a water sample has been taken to our lab for testing. Results take approximately 24 hours, which means residents who live on 5th St will remain under a bottled water/boil advisory until the test results are returned.

❗️ONLY RESIDENTS ON 5th ST ARE AFFECTED.❗️

Key Guidelines During the Advisory:

❗️Boil water for 1 minute before using it for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, or washing dishes. Bottled water is preferred.

❗️Infant Safety: Use only bottled water if you are pregnant, nursing, or preparing formula for infants as an added precaution.

❗️Showering/Laundry: Showering is generally safe, but avoid swallowing water. Laundry is also safe, though contaminants can occasionally cause discoloration.

❗️Duration: Advisories typically last at least 48 hours to allow time for proper testing and confirmation.

As always, ALL updates will be posted on this page.

Nothing says “Happy Monday” like pulling up to the Yard Waste site and finding wood dumped past the gate and bags of garbage mixed in for good measure.

Just a quick reminder: the yard waste site is for yard waste — leaves, grass, branches, etc. It’s not a landfill and it’s not a place for household garbage or whatever you cleaned out of the garage this weekend.

Thankfully the vast majority of people in our community take pride in the town and use the site the right way. We appreciate you more than you know.

For everyone else… let’s try to do a little better.

Also keep an eye on the weather the next couple days — things could get a little dicey.

Have a great week, everyone! 🤙🏼
