Safe Kids Bartholomew County is one of more than 500 Safe Kids coalitions in the U.S. working to reduce childhood injuries from motor vehicles, sports, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more.

Mission: Safe Kids Worldwide is a global organization dedicated to preventing injuries in children, the number one killer of kids in the United States. With so many of us home and mindful of sanitizing and disinfecting, this is a timely reminder to keep cleaning products out of reach and in their original containers.

Safe Kids Worldwide President Torine Creppy and Dr. Benjamin Hoffman (AV Blue Ribbon Panel member) were recently featured in the New York Times regarding the expected increase of pediatric injuries in the home during COVID-19. Experts are concerned that as more children find themselves cooped up at home due to the virus, they are at higher risk for bumps, scrapes and broken bones.

Sadly, the 35th child this year to perish from being left in a vehicle happened in our own Indiana. These preventable deaths happen across all socioeconomic levels, to caregivers of all backgrounds and experience.
With the heat of summer slowly winding down, we may think the risk of hot vehicles is removed, too. Even in mild temperatures, the heat inside a vehicle can soar. Let's continue to be mindful of our little people depending on us to keep them safe.

They thought she was taking a nap. Instead, she died in a hot car. The little girl is this story is the 35th victim of vehicular #heatstroke in 2019, according to noheatstroke.org. One is too many. Educate parents/caregivers on risks associated with kids and hot cars.
