Even rehabbers have “situations”!! Yesterday afternoon I started hearing a fawn crying in my woods. The crying continued all night through this morning so the decision was made to start canvassing the woods looking for the baby. 🕷️🐛🐜🪲🪳This is a tricky situation because the Mothers leave the babies alone all day and return at dusk….. “don’t kidnap wildlife”
We didn’t want to move the baby unless we knew that it was in fact in distress. Luckily my neighbor was also active in the search and found the baby. I contacted Crow’s Hollow who is one of the few approved rehab facilities approved to take a fawn in our area. She determined the baby did in fact need assistance from pics so I brought the fawn to her and it is now receiving the care it needs. But….. there is another one we heard cries from so the situation is still active! ♥️🦌♥️rehabbers working together to make a difference ♥️🦌♥️

This is VERY true for squirrels. They need a very specific diet to provide correct nutrition to avoid metabolic bone disease. Baby squirrels are even trickier. Feeding the wrong formula can turn to sludge in their gut which cannot be digested and WILL kill them. They can aspirate with improper feeding technique which can cause aspiration pneumonia…. Which can kill them. Most babies recently abandoned can go 24 hours without any food or liquid. We also do not start with feeding formula as the baby’s system needs a good flush prior to starting milk type feeding. I can assist you in assessing the condition of the baby so reach out immediately. Keeping them warm is the BEST thing a finder can do! ♥️🐿️

PSA‼️Over half of the critters we have received through our hospital doors in the past two weeks have been fed by the finder. We understand the caring nature this response comes from, but PLEASE, we beg you, call us before attempting any sort of care. Ask us for advice. Do not feed injured or orphaned wildlife.

If the animal is visibly injured and where safe to do so, you can contain them in a box or tote then call us. Or stand back and watch them as you call us for advice. 📞

When an animal comes into care, our trained staff assess the patient's health and correct dehydration. We provide the correct nutrition based on the animal's state. Incorrectly feeding or offering water can be deadly in some situations. We have seen incorrect diets, unstable critters falling into water dishes, and food being given in ways that harm the animal.
