The Saluda Pop Up Pantry serves people in need of food. It's a place to freely shop three days a week. In 2022, "The Pantry" received a beautification grant from The Polk County Appearance Commission (PCAC) to improve the entry way with fused glass flowers.

McCreery Park Blossoms with New Plantings Thanks to Polk County Beautification Grant

Saluda, NC — McCreery Park is blooming—literally—thanks to a $1,500 beautification grant awarded by the Polk County Appearance Commission through their BeautifulFoothills.org program. The grant helped fund a vibrant new landscaping project along the park’s newly installed ADA-accessible pathway, made possible by the tireless efforts of the Friends of McCreery Park and a team of dedicated local volunteers.
The community-driven project features a colorful and diverse selection of native plants, flowering perennials, drought-tolerant grasses, and ornamental shrubs—all carefully selected by Joel Kirby, landscape architect and board member. Designed with accessibility, beauty, and sustainability in mind, the new plantings enhance the park’s role as a welcoming space for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.

“This project has truly been a labor of love,” said Scott Cardais, Board President of the Friends of McCreery Park. “We wanted to create an experience along the ADA path that reflects the natural beauty of our region and invites everyone to enjoy the park in a peaceful, inclusive way.”

The effort was more than just aesthetic. The chosen plants support pollinators, conserve water, provide seasonal interest, and even offer food and shelter for birds and small wildlife. Favorites include purple coneflowers, Japanese maples, lavender, and prairie dropseed—all adding color, texture, and life to the park.

Volunteers logged over 34 hours of planting work across multiple days, turning vision into reality with shovels, gloves, and a deep-rooted sense of community pride. Their contributions, along with plant materials and support from the City of Saluda, reflect a remarkable commitment to improving the town’s public spaces.
The Friends of McCreery Park extend their sincere thanks to the Polk County Appearance Commission for their generous support of this project. The grant not only helped bring this phase to life—it also laid the groundwork for the next phase of projects. A second planting initiative has already begun around the newly renovated Scout Hut, further enhancing the park’s natural beauty and usability.

McCreery Park continues to grow—literally and figuratively—as a cherished gathering space for the Saluda community. Those interested in reserving the Scout Hut or the Pavilion for private events can contact the City of Saluda for more information.
For more information about the Friends of McCreery Park or to get involved, visit the park or reach out to the organization directly.
