FOOD & NUTRITION SERVICES
The Food & Nutrition Services Department is facing many challenges during the opening of the 2021-2022 school year. The number one challenge is the department is short-staffed, as is the rest of the country in the food service industry, and we need to meet the demands of our students. The second major challenge is the limited supply chain for food and paper supplies to meet the needs of our district. This has now become another pandemic for any industry in the U.S. and school foodservice is no different. Our district is experiencing an order fill rate from vendors at 60% or less and the time it takes to receive products backordered to meet the needs of our district is 3-4 weeks. This is causing major shortages in all items needed to meet the needs of our students. For example, milk, which has been a staple commodity for any school district, has become a scarcity to fulfill the needs of students. What does this mean? The plan of action is to utilize multiple vendors and purchase products from any vendor that has stock available to fulfill the needs of our district. This could possibly create menu changes when needed and the Food & Nutrition Services Department will communicate to the best of its ability to school sites and the parent community, but there may be times when last minute changes may be required. If menu information is needed, we encourage our education community to find information on the Food & Nutrition Services webpage or call our office at (925) 682-8000 extension 3775. We will be experiencing these situations for quite some time and as long as the labor workforce throughout the country continues to struggle, this will create a domino effect in every supply chain throughout the U.S. The Mt. Diablo Unified School District will continue to show perseverance and find ways to meet the needs of our students in every way possible.
