WATCH FOR NOTICES

Keep an eye out in coming weeks for these bright green envelopes that say "Horry County Exemption Audit Notice".

If you receive one, please do not throw it out!

This is your reminder that the Assessor's Office is missing documentation regarding legal residence applications. Missing documents can be submitted via email, fax or mail.

These notices are being sent this week to anyone who was given "provisional or conditional" approval of their legal residence status.

The deadline to turn in missing documents to avoid a rebill at the higher rate is May 31, 2026.

Have questions? Contact the Horry County Assessor's Office at (843) 915-5040 or email us at [email protected]

(Note: 'Legal Residence' is the statewide special tax assessment for those who own and live in a home in SC full-time. If you do not currently receive that special assessment, you can apply online at our website.)

NEW HOME? APPLY FOR LEGAL RESIDENCE

Did you buy a new home in the past year, or have a change to your deed? Apply for the 'Legal Residence' tax exemption! Approximately 3,400 letters are being mailed out this week to encourage community members to apply for the tax exemption.

'Legal Residence' is a statewide special tax assessment rate for those who own and live in a home full-time in SC. SC law provides the 4% assessment ratio on primary residential properties (the alternative is 6%). This only applies to primary residences, not second/vacation homes.

It's a good idea to apply as soon as you file your 2025 taxes, as those documents are a part of the application process to receive the exemption. If you had a change on your deed (married or divorced, added someone, put property into trust, transferred spouse to spouse, etc.), you'll need to update your property status with the Assessor's Office to continue to receive the exemption.

You can apply online at the link below. Questions? Email [email protected] to receive assistance.

STAY OFF ROADS UNTIL CONDITIONS IMPROVE

We have no doubt you’d be great at driving in the snow we're about to receive in Horry County, but there's no need for you to show us. We believe you.

Please help out Horry County Fire Rescue crews, law enforcement and our other by staying in until road conditions improve.

Driving in snow puts you, your vehicle AND other drivers at risk, AND also risks the safety of the first responders who will be dispatched out—on snow-covered, dangerous roads—to help you.

By staying in, you'll be doing us a favor, and we appreciate you for that!

Don't drive unless you absolutely have to.
