Columbia County Democratic Committee

Elects New Leadership

The Columbia County Democratic Committee (CCDC) elected new officers on Thursday, January 8, in a move that strengthens the organization's leadership for the crucial 2026 election season.

Representatives of the county’s town Democratic organizations chose Mike Dvorchak and Abbie Hodgson as co-chairs of the County Committee, which represents all Democrats in Columbia County. Both have been serving in key roles in the organization and have years of political experience.

For the past four years, Dvorchak has been CCDC’s first vice chair, co-fundraising chair, and a member of the Communications Committee. He is midway through a four-year term as Hillsdale town supervisor, in which he has been concentrating on infrastructure upgrades, increased transparency, and grant opportunities.

“We all recognize that November 3, 2026, is the most important election in our nation’s history. The new leadership team, along with the entire membership, stands ready to meet this challenge,” said Dvorchak.

Hodgson brings more than two decades of political work to her new role as CCDC co-chair, having been involved in over 100 campaigns at the local, state, and national levels. Locally, she serves on the CCDC Executive Committee and is a co-chair of the Taghkanic Democrats. Hodgson also is vice president of state affairs at a national mental health advocacy organization.

“The Columbia County Democratic Party is entering 2026 united, energized, and ready for the work ahead. Our focus is clear: electing Democrats at the local, state, and federal levels who reflect our values and deliver for our communities,” said Hodgson.

At Thursday’s meeting, the County Committee also elected Claire Ackerman as first vice chair and Victoria Seipp as second vice chair.

Ackerman is a Columbia County native who has nearly 15 years of political experience at the local, state, and federal levels. She is the CCDC fundraising co-chair, and has held many leadership roles within CCDC and the Claverack Democrats and worked on numerous campaigns. Ackerman is the president of a local foundation supporting nonprofit organizations in Columbia County.

Seipp has been involved in local Democratic organizing since before she could vote, most recently as campaign manager of Jackie Salvatore’s successful race for Columbia County sheriff. Seipp, also a Columbia County native, previously worked at the Columbia County Board of Elections and as a field organizer for the New York State Democratic Committee.

Library Funding is

On the Ballot This Fall

See Proposal Two On the Back of Your Ballot

This fall, voters in Ancram, Copake and Hillsdale will vote on whether to increase the amount of tax dollars raised in their towns to support the Roe Jan Community Library. By voting yes on Proposal Two, which is on the back of the ballots, voters will say “Yes, we want to provide more financial support for the Library.”

Known as a 414 vote for the law that authorizes the Library to put a proposal on the ballot, this is a direct, democratic way for voters to help fund their local library.

Four years ago, when the voters last approved an increase, taxes from the three towns covered about 40% of the Library’s annual operating budget. Due to inflation and other cost increases, and because the amount of tax money the library receives has not changed since 2021, the funds now cover about 30% of operating costs. The library must raise the rest of the funds from donations, events and grants.

Impact of Proposal Two

If Proposal Two passes, property owners will pay a Library tax of $8.98 per $100,000 of full market value for their property. If the property is valued at $300,000, the library tax will be $26.94 per year. If the value is $500,000, it will be $44.90 and if it is $800,000, the tax will be $71.84, and so on.

Copake’s total annual payment would be $109,520, Hillsdale’s would be $73,235, and Ancram’s would be $48,850.

Your tax bill shows the taxes collected on the Library tax line. The tax collector collects the money and passes it on to the library. Library taxes are not part of the towns’ budgets.

Want to know more?

Go to roejanlibrary.org/414-faqs

Or contact Library Director Tammy Gaskell at [email protected] or 518 324-4101.

We encourage everyone to vote. Remember that you have to turn over the ballot to vote!

WHEN & WHERE TO VOTE

Election Day is Tuesday, November 4. Note that in Copake all voting will be at the Park Building on Mountain View Road, Ancram voting will be at Town Hall and Hillsdalers will vote at the Fire Company Building.

Hello Copake Democrats,
On this year's ballot there are two proposals. The second one, Proposal #2, requests an increase in the annual Copake contribution to the Roeliff Jansen Community Library.
In order for our voters to have useful information regarding the proposal, below you will find an explanatory statement from the library:

On the back of the ballot this year will be Proposal Two, which calls for an increase in Copake’s funding for the Roeliff Jansen Community Library, the first such increase since 2021. Copake currently contributes $66,472 in tax dollars to the Library. Proposal Two would increase the tax to $109,520.

We recommend you vote YES on Proposal Two.

Under Proposal Two, the total Library tax will be $8.98 per $100,000 of full market property value. If the full market value of your house is $300,000 your share of the Library tax would be $26.94 per year. If the value is $500,000 your share would be $44.90 and if it is $800,000 your share would be $71.84.

The last time taxes were approved for the Library the funds equaled 40% of budgeted expenses for the year. Due to inflation and other increases in expenses over the past four years, those yearly payments now cover only about 30% of budgeted expenses. At the same time, the funds approved in 2021 are worth 14% less than when voters approved these amounts.

The amounts to be raised by the 414 increases will bring the total to 45% of budgeted expenses — still very low compared to most libraries in the region who receive on average about 85% of their support from local taxes. These funds help pay for salaries, books, e-resources, internet access, building maintenance, and more, all the things that help make the Roe Jan Library an essential component of our community.

Ancram and Hillsdale, the other two towns the Library serves, will each be voting on their own Proposal Two. Assuming each of the towns vote yes, each would be paying the same $8.98 per $100,000, just as each town pays the same rate for school taxes.

With resources and services available free to everyone in the area — all ages, all interests — the Library is a community center that helps people connect. It’s a vital asset that makes Copake a better place for all of us to live.

Proposal Two will be on the back of your ballot, so be sure to flip it over to vote YES.
Board of Directors,
Roeliff jansen Community Library

Special note: All voting this year in Copake on Election Day will take place in the Copake Park Building on Mountain View Road, located across from Town Hall and behind the Copake Rapid Care
