Mesa Verde Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #74 is proud to announce our endorsement of Tyson Cox for Montezuma County Sheriff.

Throughout this election process, Tyson Cox has demonstrated professionalism, leadership, and a clear understanding of the operational and staffing challenges facing modern law enforcement. He has consistently shown a willingness to engage with deputies, detention staff, and members of our community regarding the future of the Sheriff’s Office and the direction it must take moving forward.

Our membership believes that Tyson Cox recognizes the importance of workforce stability, training, officer wellness, accountability, and modernization within the Sheriff’s Office. We also believe he understands that strong public safety services depend upon strong relationships, both within the agency and throughout the community.

Last night marked a huge step toward the finish line—I officially made the primary ballot for June!

I truly can’t express enough gratitude to all the delegates who showed up to the assembly and supported this campaign. Your time, and commitment to our community mean everything.

I’m honored, I’m energized, and I look forward to continuing this journey and serving Montezuma County.

I am extremely honored and excited to announce that Allen Phelps will be my Undersheriff when elected to the office of Montezuma County Sheriff.

Allen is a man of faith and honor and possesses an incredible work ethic. Allen joined the Sheriff's Office in 2017 and has held the position of Patrol Deputy, Patrol Sergeant, Detective, and has most recently been the Patrol Lieutenant.

I am humbled and grateful that Allen has chosen to take this journey with me. I could not ask for a better leader to collaborate with and move the Sheriff's Office forward into the future.

Allen is the leader all leaders should strive to be. He approaches even the toughest days with a positive attitude and is always striving to build strength and accountability within his team.

One of my top priorities as the Montezuma County Sheriff will be curbing the flow of illegal narcotics into our county. This is absolutely one of the most pressing issues facing Montezuma County.

In 2025, nearly 100 pounds of methamphetamine, 9 ounces of powder fentanyl, 23,370 fentanyl pills, and 168 pounds of co***ne were seized through various investigations.

Montezuma County has become a hub in the illegal narcotics trade. Highway 160/491 has become a main trafficking route of drugs flowing north from Mexico through Arizona and New Mexico.

Investigations have revealed nine separate drug distribution organizations currently operating within Montezuma County that are sourced by international criminal organizations.

Large-scale, multi-jurisdictional narcotics investigations are now originating out of Montezuma County. Due to the narcotics crisis in our county, we have seen property crimes, auto theft, and person crimes skyrocket. And not just increase in specific areas but increase county-wide.

The narcotics investigation unit has seen budget cuts this past year, including one investigator and a criminal analyst. These cases have to be prioritized, which requires proper staffing.

My solution is this: add 2 K9 interdiction units to intercept the flow of narcotics coming into our county and then interdict money that is headed south. With the assistance of federal agencies, that money can then be seized, and a percentage eventually returned to the agency. Granted, seizure laws have become difficult and often not timely, but I believe it is worth the effort.

Also, additional resources have to be added to the long-term narcotics investigation team. If this can be accomplished, we can attack this problem from both sides, cutting off the supply and dealing with the end user, and then pursuing long-term investigations to deal with the distribution end.

This will obviously require a financial investment from the Board of County Commissioners, but I believe we can all agree that it would be worthwhile. Drugs in our community affect everyone. We have had multiple mass fentanyl overdoses resulting in deaths and taxing our health care system, along with our law enforcement. In 2025, a narcotics investigator was exposed to fentanyl during a search warrant, and a State Trooper was also exposed to fentanyl while booking an inmate into the jail.

It is my firm belief that if we do not address this problem now, it will escalate to an unmanageable level, making enforcement nearly impossible.

Your kind words, conversations, and belief in my commitment to serve mean more to me than I can express. After 22 years of serving our county, it is truly an honor to continue working alongside the people who make this community so strong.

This season is a reminder of what matters most—service, integrity, compassion, and looking out for one another. I am grateful to call this place home and proud to serve a community that values respect, accountability, and teamwork.

For the past 22 years, I have served Montezuma County in the Sheriff's Office, working in every department. I have dedicated my career to serving and protecting this county.

I am running for Sheriff because experience matters. Leadership matters. Supporting our deputies and strengthening trust between law enforcement, and the community we serve, matters. Our community deserves a sheriff who understands every level of this job -from the ground up.

I am ready to lead with integrity, accountability, and a deep commitment to public safety.
