Our Story
Beaver Hangouts is a virtual mentoring program that provides support seeking post-secondary pathways for underserved students in K-12 classrooms across Oregon, via Skype, Google Hangouts, and WebEx. Throughout the year College Access Coaches, made up of OSU students, connect with their classrooms to discuss overcoming barriers and the importance of pursuing post-secondary education. The coaches give their students an inside look at college life, provide grade-specific programming on college access, and even invite the classrooms to tour the University at the end of the year. Beaver Hangouts is completely free and easily adaptable to fit your classroom’s needs. All that is required from the classroom is a computer, webcam, and videoconferencing platform. We take care of all the rest!
Goals for Beaver Hangouts:
1. Combating barriers to college access intervention, such as distance, cost, and lack of resources or initiative.
2. Providing the proper tools and guidance necessary for all students to attain their highest educational potential, regardless of socioeconomic status.
3. Create a college-going culture in every school we partner with and instilling the belief that every student has the ability to attain a post-secondary education if they so choose.
4. Serve a minimum of 650 students for the 2018-2019 academic year.
