A young woman with leukemia needed help and Brother Evan McFadden of Oregon Beta (Oregon State) stepped up. He donated peripheral blood stem cells to give her a fighting chance at remission. He is an active participant in Be the Match, the national bone marrow donor registry. Thank you Brother McFadden for being a living example of The Bond and the values of Phi Delta Theta.

Rush week is finally over, but it wouldn’t have been such a success without all of the hard work put in by the chapter over the last few weeks.

Fantastic job by brothers Daniel Dhas and Wade Pickering who oversaw/led the most ambitious work week project in recent Oregon Beta memory. Since arriving back in Corvallis, we have repainted nearly the entire first floor and added stadium seating to the basement. (Basement pictures coming soon)

Huge thank you to everyone who got involved, it looks like we are in for another great year here at Oregon Beta.

Oregon Beta would like to wish our Chapter Adviser, Erin Haynes the very happiest of birthdays. This past year, Erin was the recipient of the Samuel V. Stone Chapter Adviser of the Year Award. Haynes has served this Chapter loyally for the greater part of the last fifty years and continues to represent the values we hold dear. Acting as both a leader and second father to countless brothers that have followed him, Erin represents what many active brothers and alumni aspire to be. Happy Birthday Erin, and God bless everything you have done for us and will continue to do.

Initiation was held in the Oregon Beta Chapter room with 21 men going through. Alums John Lidrstrom, Steve Walker, Chris Buscherer and Erin Haynes were in attendance. President Steven Guerrero officiated the ceremony and a delightful celebratory dinner was held afterword. Congratulations to the 21 new initiated members of Phi Delta Theta Oregon Beta.

Two days after the 171st anniversary of the Snowball Rebellion, the chapter hosted 14 members of the Beta Theta Pi - Oregon State University Colony for Monday night dinner. We are glad to show fellowship to this band of fellow Greeks from Miami. Oregon Beta wishes you the very best.

We had the privilege of hosting our annual Pie A Phi event last week. The one day event successfully raised 1300$ for the LiveLikeLou Foundation and we would like to thank everyone who came out and supported. This means so much for our chapter and we are so grateful to make this contribution to a foundation that has touched so many lives. For those who missed out, here is a video of our chapter advisor Erin Haynes getting pie’d by our amazing philanthropy chairmen.

James Coleman, Bond #679 pictured next to the active president. Mr. Coleman is among many of the legendary greats of the 1950’s. The active brothers were humbled by his presence. Mr. Coleman’s contributes towards our remodel serve as a reminder that there is continuous support throughout one of the strongest alumni bases in the country. Thank you Mr. Coleman, for giving us the privilege to meet you and show you around.

This was a very exciting week for Oregon Beta as we received six awards at the Phi Delta Theta Biennial Convention in San Antonio.

We are honored to have received Excellence in Ritual, The GHQ Award, Excellence in Recruitment and Initiation, Bronze Star Excellence Award, and Most Outstanding Large Chapter House.

The final award was given to our very own Erin Haynes. Brother Haynes was awarded the Samuel V Stone Advisor of the Year Award for his dedication and years of service to Oregon Beta.

We are so thankful for all the brothers of Oregon Beta who have worked so hard to make these achievements happen. #ProudtobeaPhi #GoBeavs

It is incredible to know that we have such a strong alumni force that is willing to support us. Go Beavs!

We just hit over $1,105,000 in pledges towards the Centennial Campaign or Oregon Beta! We are making progress.

Last week the design committee met with the architect and finalized the plans for the work this summer. Big things are happening and you can still be a part of it! We are still short of our total goal of $1.5 Million. Ask us how you can contribute today!

Shoutout to our Phi of the Week, Chris Dillon! Chris exemplifies the ideals of a Phi Delt. He holds two positions in the house! His first responsibility is the tough duties of network chairman. After a few long weeks of finicky WiFi, he has it back up and running better than ever. His second position is Pallas Chairman. Chris is in charge of holding meetings with Phikeia and making sure that they are focusing on their sound learning while excelling in their academics. Congratulations to our Phi of the Week!

This weekend we had the honor of winning Kappa Kappa Gamma's philanthropy for the 2nd year in a row! Too Hot to Handle was an amazing event and with the added motivation of helping kids have optimal access to books and reading materials we were all in. Thank you again to the amazing ladies of Kappa Kappa Gamma for having us!

Recently, Oregon State University junior Nick Steele donated peripheral blood stem cells to a stranger in need of a life saving transplant. Thanks to Nick’s selfless act of compassion, this patient has now been given the gift of life, an incredibly significant opportunity that our organization does not take for granted.

Nick registered with Be the Match at Oregon State on the Corvallis campus in 2015. When asked about his donation experience, he stated “The experience as a whole was amazing. I have donated blood multiple times before, but donating stem cells felt like I truly made a direct difference in someone’s life. Be the Match provided me with all of the information and resources that I needed to ensure that I was prepared for anything that should occur.”

Donating stem cells or bone marrow may seem like a daunting process, but we urge all individuals to join the registry. Being inconvenienced for a short period of time is nothing compared to the difference that a donation can make in another person's life. Thank you for your act of heroism, Nick!

A hundred years ago, two men from the Oregon Agricultural College local fraternity, Kappa Sigma Nu were making their way eastward by train to the Phi Delta Theta General Biennial convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were there to finalize the receipt of a charter for their 11 year old local fraternity. Their group had made a commitment in 1912 that when it came to associating with any “national” group, “It is to be Phi Delta Theta or nothing”. The Convention was called to order on January 1, 1918 and was unlike any in recent years. The country was at war. Canadian brothers have been at war for 3 years a number have been killed. The training of the new American Army needed the unified efforts of all citizens. The faction split that existed in the previous convention was met by an attitude of unity and growth. Six groups included Eastern stalwarts like Colgate, Swarthmore and Pittsburg and up and comers from the west, University of Oklahoma and the two Agriculture/Land Grant colleges from Washington and Oregon. Noted Phi, Fred R. Cowles Kansas ’06, wrote: “ January 2, 1918 was a glorious day for Phi Delta Theta, for on that day in Regular convention assembled, we declared to the world that we were truly national fraternity and that we would no longer be tied down by convention and prejudice, but would carry our banner into every place in the country that is worthy of a chapter of Phi Delta Theta. Our expansion is not yet finished, for the great state universities of the West, that are in the state of development present for us a fertile field. To satisfy the cry ‘no more chapters but internal improvement’ we have instituted a plan for carrying out our internal improvement to the very highest degree. “ The Western Union telegraph came to the KSN President, George Doolittle, at 610 Jefferson Street in Corvallis on January 2, 1918 and it read “CHARTER GRANTED”. It was signed, HEINIE. The next telegram on January 3 made it official. It read: CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES. I AM PLEASED BEYOND WORDS. It was signed: ARTHUR R PRIEST. Thus begins The Centennial Celebration of Oregon Beta of Phi Delta Theta.
