Jose Toscano – Candidate for Costa Mesa Mayor 2026

Costa Mesa will elect its third mayor in the November 3, 2026 general election, with Jose Toscano emerging as the first candidate to announce his campaign.

Jose Toscano is a lifelong Costa Mesa resident and mayoral candidate running in the November 2026 city election. A graduate of Costa Mesa High School, he is currently a political science student at UCLA and has been active in local civic affairs, including serving on the Fairview Park Steering Committee.

Toscano’s campaign emphasizes reducing government red tape, improving transparency and ethics, and encouraging housing development through streamlined permitting. He presents his youth as an asset, arguing that fresh perspectives and direct community engagement are needed to address Costa Mesa’s future challenges.

On November 4, 2025, California will hold a statewide special election to determine who controls the drawing of congressional district maps through 2030. This measure was introduced in response to Texas’s mid-decade partisan redistricting. Critics argue that the proposal would enable gerrymandering in California, giving state leaders the power to manipulate district boundaries as political retaliation against Republican majorities elsewhere.

This is my response to someone blaming the LA fires on global warming:

I first blame the environmental extremists who value a fish over humans. Then I blame the politicians who too eagerly accommodate the environmental extremists. Then I blame the Leftists who continue to vote for the same Leftists every election. Global warming is a farce and has nothing to do with the mismanagement and gross neglect that has now created the biggest catastrophe this country has ever seen.

The race for Costa Mesa City Council is underway, and Jeff Pettis is in the spotlight.

One of Jeff’s main concerns is homelessness, which he sees as a growing crisis in Costa Mesa with no signs of abating. He criticizes the incumbent and his opponent, who are part of the City Council’s liberal majority, for their approach of complying with every Sacramento mandate and funneling millions of taxpayer dollars into new housing construction for the homeless. Jeff views this strategy as cowardly and shortsighted. He believes the entire City Council Majority is compromised by campaign contributions from the cannabis industry, builders and Unions. He believes he is uniquely qualified to address this and many other pressing issues in Costa Mesa, drawing on his education and diverse experiences.

Don Harper, businessman and Costa Mesa City Council District 1 councilmember, reports for Costa Mesa Brief.

Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed a bill called Assembly Bill AB-1955 that will take effect on January 1, 2025. This bill prohibits school districts, charter schools, and state special schools from requiring employees or contractors to disclose a student's sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender to their parents.

On August 7, 2024 Costa Mesa Brief traveled to the Orange County Board of Education (OCBE) to hear from concerned parents and citizens about AB-1955, how it impacts them and what they want the OCBE to do about it.
