Good Friends, Great Memories & a Little Wild Weather! 💨

What a wonderful day at our Project Independence Friends & Family Picnic! ❤️

More than 100 friends, family members, clients, staff, and supporters joined us for a fun-filled afternoon of food, laughter, and reconnecting! We even had a few special blasts from the past, including former CEO Deb Marsteller and former Fund Development Director Todd Eckert! It was so nice to see familiar faces and celebrate the friendships that make Project Independence so special.

Mother Nature decided to add a little excitement toward the end, with some crazy winds that sent everyone scrambling to rescue a few canopies and tents! 😂💨 Thankfully, the rain held off until we were winding down.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us and helped make the day such a success. We loved seeing everyone together and can't wait to do it again!

📸 Enjoy some favorite moments from the day!

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) - a time to recognize the value, talent, skills, and contributions people with disabilities bring to workplaces and communities every day.

This year, Project Independence is celebrating the theme “Celebrating Value and Talent.” Throughout October, we’ll be sharing a new article each week highlighting employment, inclusion, and the importance of creating opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to build meaningful careers and contribute their talents.

Follow along all month as we celebrate ability, challenge misconceptions, and spotlight the value of an inclusive workforce.

‌
Jordan recently joined our Job Development program, and he’s ready to find his next opportunity.
‌
And Jordan brings experience - more than 20 years of it. From event setup, equipment maintenance and deliveries to four years as a head custodian, he’s a dependable, hands-on worker who is comfortable with tools, physical work and getting the job done.

Our team is working with Jordan on job searches and interview preparation as he looks for a full-time custodial, maintenance, warehouse, stocking or general labor position in Orange County. Are you hiring? Know someone who is? Help us connect Jordan with the right employer!

We’re celebrating $5,000 for Healthy Living!

Project Independence is grateful to receive a $5,000 grant from the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation in support of our Healthy Living Program!

The funding will help provide basic kitchen essentials and healthy ingredients, giving the people we serve more opportunities to learn about nutrition, prepare healthier meals at home and build greater independence.

PI CEO Robert Watson and Board Chair Dan Pittman joined our friends at Sprouts in Costa Mesa for the check presentation as part of Sprouting Healthy Communities Day, a nationwide celebration of healthier communities.

A huge THANK YOU to Sprouts for investing in the health and independence of the people we serve. We’re excited about what we can grow together!

Community inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at Project Independence.

For nearly 50 years, we have worked to ensure that adults with developmental disabilities have opportunities to live, work, make choices, build relationships, and participate fully in their communities.

The landmark Olmstead v. L.C. decision has played an important role in protecting the right of people with disabilities to receive services in community settings rather than being unnecessarily segregated or institutionalized. Recent changes in the federal government's interpretation of Olmstead have raised serious concerns among disability rights advocates about the future of these protections.

We encourage our community to learn more from Disability Rights California in the post below.

Community integration is a civil right.
