This is my sole opinion, Susan Storey Rubio, the La Salle County Republican Party Chair. This not the a statement representing the local party. It is for informational purposes only and I urge all property tax payers in La Salle County to attend the hearing, voice their opinions and CAST THEIR VOTE IN NOVEMBER!!

Key Words: “La Salle, Dimmit want to join SWTX tax district”

Emphasis: “LA SALLE … WANTS TO JOIN TAX DISTRICT”

Read that aloud and repeat. Let that sink in. Do La Salle County citizens really want to pay another tax? The La Salle County Judge, as he has a history of doing for tax-hikes, in lieu of asking all of the voters to voice their desires by casting their by voter referendum (special election) he took it to a few select citizens to ask they sign a petition to skip over asking everyone for their opinion and just place it on the November ballot and not fully disclosing it would be such a large tax increase to property owners. FYI: every single sitting County Commissioner and a large number of county employees, I am told, signed the petition and non-employee citizens only found out about the increase after it was published.

I was “For” the annex until it was disclosed that “La Salle County wants to sign up for another tax increase.

I am going to go down and see what my increased amount will be and report back to you. I have no problem sharing.

The article says the increase on an “average home value” will be $180. What is the value of that average home? And if you are paying real property taxes plus mineral taxes, which the majority of tax revenue IS derived by the mineral taxes, that number will likely need to add a comma and 3 more zeroes to it per owner. The “INCREASE” alone. Let’s think about this, the majority of tax payers in La Salle County do have a home of “average value” in Cotulla, do you want to add on the (they make it seem measley but to many it is a lot) “$180” to your current taxes???

Many property owners are elderly and have no children that are in CISD schools, are already paying an increased tax to afford the Cotulla high schoolers to be able to obtain an Associate’s Degree from SWTX free of charge, and now may have to pay another property tax to annex into the SWTX Tax District? How many are already strapped?

I’m sorry. After full disclosure, I say “No”.

July 7th at 6 pm in Cotulla - the County will hold a hearing. Think about it and let them hear what YOU think and let them see and hear in November.

Students from La Salle County will still be able to attend SWTX College. The tuition won’t change if Cotulla votes to annex and pay the additional or not.

Southwest Texas College’s board of trustees accepted annexation petitions from La Salle and Dimmit counties at their May 21 meeting, leaving it up to voters to decide whether they join the college’s taxing district in November.

The counties needed to gather signatures from five percent of their registered voters for the petition. Now that they’ve demonstrated community backing, La Salle will hold a public hearing at their county courthouse in Cotulla at 6 p.m. July 7, and Dimmit will hold one at their courthouse in Carizzo Springs at 6 p.m. July 9.
