VFW FIREMAN OF THE YEAR-David L. Roberts of the Crewe Volunteer Fire Department was recognized as the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Fireman of the Year during a brief ceremony at a recent Department meeting. Crewe Gold Star Memorial VFW Post 7819 Commander Greg Eanes presented a certificate recognizing Robert's leadership, moral and physical courage, and commitment to a lifetime of saving lives and property while serving as a volunteer fireman. Eanes called the firemen "modern day minute who drop everything when the alarm sounds" and noted Roberts alone had 47 years of public service. Eanes said, "These men and women are local heroes. Humble when you meet them on the street but fighting tigers when attacking house fires and trying to save lives and property. Our community is in their debt." (Photo by Andy Lester)
