Virginia State Nurseries - VDOF

Virginia State Nurseries - VDOF Welcome to the Virginia Department of Forestry's Tree Nursery Page!! The Virginia Department of Forestry currently operates two state tree nurseries.

The first nursery is located along the South River in Crimora, VA. We grow a variety of mixed hardwoods and a few select conifers at this site. The second nursery is located in Courtland, VA. This nursery is focused more toward supplying seedlings for reforestation purposes. A majority of the crop here is Loblolly pine. Since Virginia is located in an area known as the "woodbasket" of the nation, Loblolly pine is intensively managed in the eastern part of the state. Estimates show that approximately 55% of the nations wood supply comes from the Southeastern US. It is also estimated that the southeast provides approximately 25% of the worlds pulpwood supply for paper.

Mission: The VDOF was established in 1914 to prevent and suppress forest fires and reforest bare lands. Since our inception, we have grown and evolved to encompass other protection and management duties: Visit our website at www.dof.virginia.gov for other general information about the Virginia Department of Forestry.

Benefits of Containerized Pine Seedlings:

- Extended planting season to allow for fall planting.
- No root damage during seedling extraction. Each seedling
has its own "plug" of soil that is planted with the seedling.
- Better Survival so no longer a need to plant "extra seedlings".
- Seedlings begin growth immediately after planting and "transplant shock" is less of a factor.
- Rapid early growth.

Seedlings available at VDOF: Virginia's Best - Loblolly pine, Control Pollinated - Loblolly pine, and Longleaf pine.

***All seedlings will be in very limited quantities, so call ahead and place your orders.

**In order to achieve the best results, containerized seedlings should be planted in the fall (Late october/Early December).

Please call the Garland Gray Forestry Center at 757-556-7706 if you have questions.

These seedlings will be available during the fall of 2018.

Great day at Garland Gray Forestry Center as WTVR TV6 Meteorologist Nikki-Dee Ray joined Tree Nursery Manager Justin Funk to tape an episode of "Nikki-Dee, Can You Be Me?" Ms. Ray helped lift about 10,000 loblolly pine seedlings out of the planting beds, grade and package them for delivery. Look for the episode to air between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. in about five weeks (we'll post the actual air date once it has been scheduled).

Top pruning began at Garland Gray Forestry Center last week. During this practice, the tops of the seedlings are clipped to control shoot growth. This will be done up to 4 times this season. Studies have shown that top pruning is one of the biggest factors contributing to seedling survival when out planting.

After 3 weeks of bad weather, the Garland Gray Forestry Center is back in full swing. Over the next 6 weeks, this facility will package and process around 14 million Loblolly pine seedlings. Those seedlings will reforest approximately 28,000 acres across the state of Virginia!! Over the course of the entire season, which started in January, the GGFC will have packaged 25 million seedlings. Forestry is currently booming in Virginia and the Virginia Department of Forestry is a huge player. Please call us or your local forester if you have questions or need assistance!

Do you have any Pinus strobus in one gallon pots?
Hi - I would like to please stop selling highly invasive, aggressive, non-native Lespedeza. Ecological Threat Lespedeza bicolor is an extremely aggressive invader of open areas, forming dense thickets, which displace native vegetation. Native to Asia and introduced into the United States in the late 1800s, it has been widely planted for wildlife habitat, especially for northern bobwhite quail. https://www.invasive.org/browse/subinfo.cfm?sub=3032 https://www.buyvatrees.com/cgi-bin/commerce.exe?preadd=action&key=LESPEDEZA__BICOLOR_1
