Zucchini, squash and long beans, oh my! Thank you to the Los Angeles Community Garden Council for showing me your plots and sharing your veggies.

Community gardens, like the ones I visited in Crenshaw, can be a great way to bring people together, revitalize neighborhoods, and teach young people how food is grown, among myriad other benefits.

I am exploring how to expand community gardens across the district.

Great to see everyone who came out to talk with me about insurance last night! Many thanks to California Department of Insurance (CDI), Stronger California, and AAA for informing constituents about the affordability and accessibility of homeowners and renters insurance. We were reminded of the importance of being covered, especially as we watch these fires burning a little too close to home. Also, thank you to the IMAN Cultural Center for hosting us and for always welcoming our community.

Get your culture fix! Continue to celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth by visiting UCLA’s unique exhibit at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, “Guatemalan Masks,” on display now. (Admission is free!) 😄🎭

Just 3 weekends left to see 'Guatemalan Masks,' featuring 80 masks depicting animals, folk personae, and historical figures that are deeply rooted in Guatemalan popular culture. Visitors will also find examples of timeworn, handwritten scripts that guide the masked performers and photographs of dances from the research trips of Jim and Jeanne Pieper, who collected these masks for more than 50 years.

Throughout #HispanicHeritageMonth, as we recognize the many contributions of the Latinx community in the US, we are celebrating a few stellar individuals, organizations, and businesses in the 54th Assembly District.

This week we begin by recognizing Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson, an Associate Professor of the Cesar E. Chavez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UCLA, who writes and teaches on race and racism, cultural history, spatial politics, and political economy. Dr. Johnson also is active with the LA Community Action Network’s struggle for housing and civil rights on skid row.

Today I participated in college signing day at UCLA with my First Lady, Michelle Obama. She shared her story of getting to college, and talked about dreaming big and shaking off the haters.

Seeing all of the celebrities was fun, but the real stars of the event were the thousands of students who showed up because they are on their way to college.

Going to college is one of the best investments. Our young people deserve us rooting for them, funding their educational dreams and fighting to ensure they have access to the best public education system we can design.

04/12/2019

Implicit bias – the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our perceptions, actions and decisions in a subconscious manner, exists and often contributes to unequal treatment based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability & other characteristics – is inherent in our healthcare, law enforcement and judicial systems.

If we can address biases before harmful decisions are made in emergency rooms, courts & beside a police car's flashing lights, we finally may be able to move toward a more fair and just society.

Support AB 241, 242 and AB 243 to advocate for a more equitable California.
