I’m excited to share that AB 2231 passed out of the legislature and is my 10th bill heading to the Governor’s desk this year. It streamlines the building of a new hospital in the City of Santa Clara!

The last remaining bill in my Support California Foster Kids legislative package was passed and is on the way to the Governor’s desk for consideration. AB 2764 standardizes eligibility for Extended Foster Care to help prevent homelessness. Together, if signed into law, my legislation extends supports to prevent homelessness and hunger, promote student success, and improve outcomes for California’s 60,000 foster youth.

AB 2768 is on the Governor’s desk for consideration and will require higher education institutions to defer or waive unpaid fees for foster youth until financial aid is disbursed to support student success and reduce homelessness. Thanks to the incredible advocates and sponsor Riverside County Office of Education Office of the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Gomez, for helping get this important bill through the long legislative process to help our most vulnerable young people.

Millions of Californians will lose CalFresh food benefits because of cuts in the big ugly federal budget, H.R. 1. My legislation AB 2765 passed the legislature and awaits the Governor’s signature to help protect vulnerable foster youth from hunger. Thank you to the broad coalition of advocates and organizations working with me on this legislation, including bill sponsors SEIU California and End Child Poverty CA.

Thank you to all my colleagues for passing AB 1961 and sending it to the Governor’s desk for consideration of signature. AB 1961 expands workplace violence restraining orders to allow for judges to issue orders protecting groups of employees based on their workplace location, as opposed to needing to be for specific individuals under threat. I am glad to be able to work with ACSA to help improve school and workplace safety for all Californians.

I am excited to share my legislation AB 2756 to ensure California kids can access needed vision care services passed the legislature and is heading to the Governor’s desk for consideration! Recent data shows only 16% of kids on Medi-Cal are getting basic eye exams, and my bill will require transparent data on utilization and help set benchmarks to create accountability to ensure access.

Thank you to California’s optometrists (California Optometric Assn) and our entire coalition fighting for California kids wellbeing for working with me to get AB 2756 through the legislative process.

Thank you to my colleagues for unanimously passing AB 2766 to help prevent homelessness and support student success for foster youth and other struggling California students. A huge thank you to all the amazing advocates and student activists, whose hard work made this result possible, especially my bill’s sponsoring organizations John Burton Advocates for Youth, Student HOMES Coalition, uAspire, and the UC Student Association (UCSA). Supporting our most vulnerable students to achieve their higher education goals pays dividends for all Californians.

This year's constituent bill idea - my legislation AB 1359 - to allow for senior citizens 80+ years old to opt-out permanently from jury service without a doctor's note passed the legislature today and now heads to the Governor's desk for consideration. If signed into law seniors can still of course serve if they're willing and able to, but they won't have to jump through hoops if they can't or don't want to be considered for jury duty. Thank you to my legislative colleagues for supporting this bill, and thanks to all California's seniors for your many decades of service!
