Cushing Senior Citizens Center - Operations Update (09-10-21)

Beginning Monday, September 13, 2021, and in cooperation with our community service partner, Project Heart, we will resume drive-thru meal service. In-person meal service is being suspended until further notice because of the impact of the coronavirus. Homebound meal service will continue uninterrupted. Other activities that typically take place at the center (transportation services, exercise, knitting, pool, cards, etc.) are suspended until further notice. Our goal is to resume in-person meal service and other activities at the center in the coming weeks.

In closing, we know this closure will impact many. Our goal is to do everything we can to protect one of our most precious assets, our seniors. We will post information on this platform when we resume in-person services and activities at the center.

In 4 years we have progressed from litter blowing freely up and down our main streets to organizing small armies to combat the problem and now Cushing Pride with the help of a major partners, Replenysh, Republic Services, TC Energy, Enbridge Energy, Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, and now Pepsi, we have reached out to our youth to learn the importance and to help us grow the recycle program right here in Cushing. A big shoutout to Cushing School Administrator Dr. Melissa Amon for taking the time to clean out and donate a small building near the AG barn and to help us build this program. Thanks to educators Brooke Holcomb and Jessica Wood as well as head grounds keeper Chris Hubbard who will take the lead in the CHS. Shown here are 10 recycle “Lend-a-bins” from Pepsi that will be placed on multiple school grounds to collect plastic and aluminum. Student volunteers will collect these bins each week for sorting. Thanks to you all! NOW LET’s DO OUR PARTS!!!!

New Emergency Management Director Selected

Cushing – Longtime Cushing resident and retired Cushing Fire Department Captain Franklin Reed has been named the new Cushing Emergency Management Director for the City of Cushing. Reed replaces the retiring Bob Noltensmeyer who served the citizens of Cushing for over 50 years.

City Manager Terry Brannon said, “Franklin brings the local experience we need to build on the legacy built by retiring Director Bob Noltensmeyer.” He continued, “Emergency management will become an integral part of our public safety team and with Franklin’s previous experience in our fire department, this integration will be seamless.”

Franklin started his career as a volunteer for the Pawnee Fire Department. Later, Reed joined the Cushing Fire Department, serving for nearly 30 years, retiring as a Captain. Reed brings over 15 years of emergency response command experience and hundreds of hours of safety training, participating in multiple emergency response exercises and annual tabletop/disaster drills for those in the petroleum industry. Reed also completed numerous tabletop drills and exercises to satisfy the annual certification requirements as a hazardous materials technician. In addition, Franklin participated in the Terrorism and Emergency Management Planning Workshop conducted in 2016, and the FBI Oklahoma City field training exercise “Critical Crossroads” conducted in 2004. Reed has been deployed to emergencies throughout Oklahoma, serving in the communities of Catoosa, Stillwater, Westport, and Carney following devastating tornados. Reed was also deployed to the Murrah building following the 1995 bombing, working in search and rescue efforts.

Franklin will assume the responsibility of leading our emergency
management team beginning this Friday.

This summer has been really busy for the Cushing Economic Development Foundation and Cushing Industrial Authority as efforts continue to recruit a grocery store to Cushing. To date, at least two grocers have and/or are least given Cushing strong consideration. Both entities (CEDF and CIA) are not giving up and will continue to work hard to recruit a grocery store to Cushing.

TOMORROW IS RECYCLING DAY!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be unable to sort recycling for our participants. If recycling is sorted, our volunteers will gladly place your recyclables in the correct containers.

From this point forward, we are unable to accept mixed bags. This is to protect the safety of our volunteers. During the last recycling event, literal bags of garbage were dropped off for our volunteers to separate. Most of our volunteers are smaller humans and the bags contained broken glass, dirty napkins, etc. Should you need to mix your bags, please help us by sorting it into our bins. We will be glad to assist you!

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but please understand that we are volunteer ran and are providing this service due to the high demand. We do not want to risk injuring someone who just wants to help make the world a better place.

Thanks, again, Cushing! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow between 10am and 2pm at our usual spot!

Good morning! Expect another hot and humid day with mainly dry conditions through 4 pm. After 4 pm, storm chances increase across northern Oklahoma with a gradual shift in storms to the south during the evening. Most areas will be dry Sunday with less humidity

Be Happy Wednesday!

This morning at 7:30 a.m., we were out canvassing neighborhoods for junk and overgrowth, and came upon Mr. Lance Larson and his 6-year old grandson Alex Jones. Little Alex had his trash collection stick and they were collecting trash from the ditches in the 800 blk S. Noble Street.

What a great way to start our Wednesday at the City of Cushing by capturing a quick photo of these two performing a GREAT community service. How transformative this could be for Cushing if we all embraced it? Block by block. Neighborhood by neighborhood. House by house. Person by person.

Help us give a HEARTY THANK YOU to Mr. Larson and Alex by hitting the "like and share" buttons. We love your #CushingPride!

The area being sevred today is adopted by the Sons of American Legion Post 108, Cushing, Ok. We appreciate the Veterans promoting #CushingPride by adopting this area for clean-up. Mr. Larson is a Veteran and serves in the local American Legion.

The adopt-a-block program is part of Cushing Pride. Please checkout their page to learn how you can plug in and make a difference in your community.

Will garbage pick up be normal? or will they be off New Years day?
Ok so I'm all for kids going to school that's fine. What I wanna know is why wouldn't y'all at least clean off the streets leading to mainly the high school? You know the one school where you have a bunch of young inexperienced drivers driving themselves to school.
What is the update on the permit from ODEQ? Have you had any luck yet?
Is the city designating a place we can haul our limbs and branches to? It would sure help us in getting our city back in order? Other wise they will be setting in our yards waiting for a week or two to get picked up.
For your information if you go to pay your city bill and nobody will come to the window for you to make your payment. It is your responsibility to sit at there drive up window for however long it takes them to come to the window, all the while the person in there has looked at you several times. However then you get confused of whether or not there actually open so you leave and it slips your mind that you didn’t get your bill paid. Then you get a phone call and a hefty late fee that they will not waive, even though you’ve been a customer for 30 plus years and have never been late. Just thought I would share how great our city utility office is....
Will there be a fall cleanup/bulk waste pickup this year?
What’s going on with the tornado sirens today?
When is the dump open? I keep finding it closed. They have no hours listed on their many signs!
Just wanted to thank the electrical department for their speedy work at getting the power back on tonight
Update on power outage?
Is there going to be a big trash day? Hope i'm saying that right. :)
